3-Step Biscuits or How to Break up With Your Girlfriend Biscuits image

Steps:

  • Stir together all ingredients (dough will be crumbly).
  • Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
  • Knead 3 or 4 times.
  • Pat or roll dough to 1/2 inch thickness; cut with a 2 1/2 inch round cutter, and place on a lightly greased baking sheet.
  • Bake at 400°F for 18 to 20 minutes or until golden.
  • -----------------------------------------------------.
  • NOTE: Keep in mind that the secret for making excellent biscuits is-- Try not to handle dough too much or too firmly-- The less manipulation (kneading, handling dough a lot with hands) the better the texture.
  • Now, About the bad reviews, please know this: In order for this to work, YOU MUST USE SELF RISING FLOUR. So go follow it "to a T" and if your girlfriend wants to break up with you over failed biscuits -- well, she is superficial and you'd be wise to break up with her before she breaks up with you! And always remember this: If you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all.

Recipe from Cottage Life magazine, April/May 1998. It won first prize in a contest. A tasty combination of rhubarb, raspberries, blueberries or cherries. Vary the fruits according to seasons such as strawberries, apples, peaches, plums, pears, blackberries. I used recipe #78579 to grease the pan.

  • BASE:.
  • Combine flour, sugar and baking powder.
  • Cut in butter until mixture is consistency of fine crumbs.
  • Beat egg and cream together.
  • Add to dry mixture, stirring to make a soft sticky dough.
  • Pat dough into a greased 9"x13"x2" baking pan.
  • FILLING:.
  • Combine rhubarb, raspberries, blueberries or cherries, sugar and flour.
  • Toss lightly.
  • Beat egg and melted butter together.
  • Add to fruit, stirring gently to mix.
  • Spread over dough.
  • TOPPING:.
  • Mix flour, sugar and baking powder together.
  • Cut in the butter.
  • Add cream, stirring to make a crumbly mixture.
  • Sprinkle evenly over fruit.
  • BAKING:.
  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Bake for 45 to 55 minutes or until golden.
  • Cut into squares.

Use up broken biscuits at the bottom of the tin to make this buttery cake. It's glazed with a sweet ganache and topped with some British biscuit favourites

Steps:

  • Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 5. Butter and line a 30 x 20cm tin. Put the butter and sugars in a mixing bowl and beat using an electric whisk until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla and almond extracts and orange zest. Mix to combine.
  • Add the eggs one by one. After each egg, make sure to whisk fast to avoid any splitting. Add the flour and baking powder and whisk for 2 mins until you have smooth batter. Fold in the milk. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake on the middle shelf for 25-30 mins until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for 10 mins, then transfer to a cooling rack until cooled completely.
  • Meanwhile, make the ganache. Put the chopped white chocolate in a large heatproof bowl. Bring the cream to a boil in a small saucepan, then immediately pour it over the chocolate. Leave for 1 min to melt. Whisk the cream and melted chocolate until you have a smooth, ganache mixture. Set aside - it'll thicken as it cools.
  • Spread the ganache on top of the cooled sponge in an even layer using a palette knife. Roughly break up the biscuits, then scatter them evenly over the cake. Cut into 12 squares.
