- Pour the cherry and blueberry pie fillings in the bottom of the dish. Sprinkle the nuts over the fruit. Open the cake mix and sprinkle the power evenly over the top.
- Slice butter into small pieces and sprinkle evenly over the top of the cake mix. Make sure to make it even so that it all melts into the cake mix.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes until the fruit starts to bubble up around the edges and the edges start to turn golden. I baked mine in a casserole dish that was deeper than a 9x13” pan so it took 40 minutes. Different pans will have different baking times, so start checking after 30 minutes.

- Combine fruit, water and sugar to taste in a Dutch oven; add citrus zest and juice if using. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to maintain a lively simmer and cook, mashing the fruit and stirring occasionally at first and then often as it thickens, until the mixture is very thick, 20 minutes to 1 hour (depending on the type of fruit). To test doneness, put a spoonful of fruit butter on a plate. If no liquid seeps from the edges, it's done. Return to a simmer to thicken more if necessary. For very smooth fruit butter, puree in a food processor or blender, then strain and push the mixture through a sieve before storing.
- If freezing or refrigerating, ladle the fruit butter into clean canning jars to within 1/2 inch of the rim. Wipe rims clean. Cover with lids. Let the jars stand at room temperature until cool before refrigerating or freezing. Or process in a water bath to store at room temperature (see Tip).

- Place the fruit in a large wide pot together with the apple juice. Bring to a boil, turn the heat down to medium-low and cook for 2 hours, stirring occasionally, every 10-15 minutes or so.
- Add the sugar, stir well and continue cooking for 30 minutes, stirring more often now and making sure you scrape the bottom and the edges of the pot well while stirring to prevent the cherry butter from catching. A large, wide cooking pot will accelerate things a little bit.
- The cooking time depends on the quantity of fruit you are turning into butter and on the size of your cooking pot. If you cook a smaller amount of cherries, you will need less time, if cooking more cherries it might take longer.
