HOMEMADE COLONIAL BREAD PUDDING MOUNT VERNON INN image

Steps:

  • 1. In a bowl, let the bread crumbs soak in the half-and-half for 6 minutes, stir in the sugar, the butter, the salt, the nutmeg, the cinnamon, the eggs, the vanilla, and the raisins, and pour into a buttered 13 by 9 inch baking dish. 2. Put the dish in a larger baking pan, pour enough hot water into the pan to reach halfway up the sides of the dish, and bake the pudding in the middle of a preheated 350F oven for 1 hour, or until it is golden.

2 cups fine dry bread crumbs
4 cups half-and-half
1 cup sugar
½ tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into bits
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
½ teaspoon cinnamon
5 large eggs, beaten lightly
2 teaspoons vanilla
½ cup raisins

My family LOVES bread pudding, and this recipe is one that I have fine tuned to their taste. I have to double this recipe, and bake it in a 9x13 inch pan for my family! It's great for breakfast or dessert and is delicious with milk poured on top! Enjoy!

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Break bread into small pieces into an 8 inch square baking pan. Drizzle melted butter or margarine over bread. If desired, sprinkle with raisins.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, combine eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Beat until well mixed. Pour over bread, and lightly push down with a fork until bread is covered and soaking up the egg mixture.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the top springs back when lightly tapped.

  • Combine the breadcrumbs with the currants in a large bowl. Add the sugar, salt, nutmeg, and ginger and combine well.
  • When the milk has cooled, strain and discard the cinnamon sticks. Whisk in the eggs. Pour into the breadcrumb mixture, and combine thoroughly.
