NEW YORK SYSTEM HOT WIENER SAUCE I

This hearty, flavorful wiener sauce is like the kind you'll find in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. It may be frozen until ready for use. Use premium grilled wieners cooked in butter, steamed hot dog buns and the fancy mustard of your choice. Spread with mustard, the sauce, chopped onions and celery salt... in that order. If you have a delicate digestive system, use with caution.

R.I. HOT WEINERS: GAGGERS (GAGGAHS), WEENIES

As far as Rhode Island regional cuisine goes, hot weiners are probably the most famous fast food delicacy there is. RI hot weiners have nicknames, such as gaggers (gaggahs), belly busters, weeners, and weenies. A weiner is typically made from a small, thin frankfurter made of veal and pork, thus giving it a different taste...

Steps:

  • 1. Lightly brown half of the chopped onion in butter. Add hamburger and stir until the hamburger loosens into small pieces.
  • 2. Add rest of spices.
  • 3. Simmer on very low heat for at least 2 hours.
  • 4. Boil or steam the hot dogs. (use and all beef hot dog as a replacement for the weiners).
  • 5. Steam the hot dog buns by wrapping them in a paper towel, and place in microwave for a few seconds on high.
  • 6. Now it's time to build the weiner. The sequence is important and should not be varied, EVER! 1.) Put cooked weiner in bun. 2.) Put yellow mustard on weiner. 3.) Put sauce on mustard. 4.) Put raw chopped onions on mustard. 5.) Sprinkle celery salt on top of onions.

3 Tbsp margarine
1 small onion, chopped
1 Tbsp garlic powder
1 1/2 Tbsp chili powder
1 1/2 Tbsp allspice
1 Tbsp salt
1 pinch black pepper
1 c water

COCKTAIL WIENERS

A sweet and savory treat for any get-together that will sure be a crowd pleaser. It's cheap and easy to make in a slow cooker with only three ingredients. I make this for any get-together and it is always a hit! I was a little unsure at first about the grape jelly concoction, but I tried it and have never done it any other way. It is so savory with just enough sweet. I always receive or over hear lots of agreement with the taste of the sauce. It always disappears at parties, and the next day I have cravings for these cocktail wienies. Try it for your next potluck, back yard BBQ, or any event!

My sons loved this dish when they were young and the oldest one still does. It's a quick fix for a busy week night or weekend. What I love about them you can add more beans or franks. You might want to add a little brown sugar or even barbeque sauce, but this is the way I make them everytime.
