SLOPPY JOE MAMAS
I grew up a Manwich® kid, thinking they were the same as sloppy joes. I was dead wrong. This is the real deal. Messy, yummy, kid-friendly perfection especially on a cold night.

THE BEST SLOPPY JOES
This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Steps:
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.
MOMMA'S SLOPPY JOES
I don't know where my mother got this recipe but it's the best sloppy joes I ever had! Whenever I make it, it reminds me of her. Also the longer you leave this in the skillet or crockpot the better it tastes!

Steps:
- 1. Brown ground beef in skillet. Drain grease and add other ingredients. Cook in skillet for 30 minutes or longer.
- 2. You may put this in a crockpot on low for several hours, the longer time allowed for the ingredients to "marry" the better. Just make sure you check it from time to time and stir so it won't dry out
GRANDMA'S BEST-EVER SLOPPY JOES
This recipe came from my grandma--one of the few we found written down! I grew up eating these sloppy joes as a kid and now my own kids love them too. Add the oatmeal in small portions and slowly--it doesn't take a whole lot. If you choose, you can also used minced onion to taste--works well if you need to cook more quickly!

These were a family favorite, when we were growing up. My son loves them, and they sre still my favorite comfort food. The meat mixture can be made ahead, and frozen, it holds up well to a microwave.

- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, onion and garlic until the meat is no longer pink. Drain.
- Whisk together the remaining ingredients to make the sauce. Add to the skillet with the beef, onion and garlic.
- Simmer uncovered over low heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring regularly, until the mixture reaches desired consistency. You can keep the skillet covered if you like the sauce “sloppier.” If the sauce is too thick, gradually stir in a small amount of warm water or beef broth. If the sauce is too thin, gradually sift in a small amount of flour while stirring vigorously to thicken.
