Steps:

  • Whip cream with a whisk until soft peaks form then whisk in the liqueur. Slather the cream over the tart and garnish with shaved chocolate using a vegetable peeler, if using. Serve.

1 store-bought large chocolate tart
1 small bar bittersweet chocolate, for shaving, optional

  • Preheat the oven to 300°F (149°C). Spread chopped hazelnuts out onto a parchment paper or silicone baking mat lined baking sheet. Toast until slightly darkened, about 5-7 minutes. Allow to cool down for 5 minutes. Turn the oven up to 350°F (177°C)
  • Using a food processor, pulse 3/4 cup of the toasted hazelnuts, the flour, sugar, and salt together until it reaches the consistency of coarse meal. (Reserve 1/4 cup of the nuts for topping.) Add the cubes of cold butter and pulse until the mixture turns into pea-sized crumbs.
  • Transfer mixture to a large bowl. Using a rubber spatula or wooden spoon, slowly stir in 3 Tablespoons of ice water. You only want to add enough water to bring the dough somewhat together. Using floured fingers or the bottom of a flat and lightly floured measuring cup, press the dough evenly into a 9-inch tart pan. You want it extremely tight in the pan. You’ll need to use pie weights for the next step, so line the crust with aluminum foil or parchment paper and add pie weights.

  • To make the crust: In a food processor, place 1/2 cup hazelnuts (reserving the remaining 1/4 cup for garnishing), flour, sugar, and salt. Pulse for a few seconds until nuts are finely ground. Add butter and pulse until mixture becomes crumbly and resembles coarse meal, about 15 pulses. Add egg and vanilla extract and keep pulsing until the dough is no longer dry and starts to clump together, about 10-15 seconds. The dough should be crumbly with large clumps. Turn dough to a lightly floured surface and form into a ball. Flatten ball slightly with your hands to form a thick disc. Wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  • To roll out the dough: On a lightly floured surface (or for easier rolling, place dough between two parchment papers - watch video), roll the dough out into a 12-inch circle, then place gently into a 9-inch tart pan with a removable bottom. You can do this by flouring a rolling pan and rolling the dough loosely around it, then unrolling it into the pan. With a sharp knife, trim the edges of the pastry to fit the tart pan. Press parchment paper or aluminum foil tightly against the crust, covering the edges to prevent them from burning. Fill with pie weights(or dried beans/uncooked rice), making sure they’re fully distributed over the entire surface. Bake crust for 20 minutes, then gently remove weights and foil, then bake for about 10 minutes longer until golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool completely.
  • Meanwhile, make the filling: Whisk the cornstarch and 1/4 cup heavy cream in a bowl until smooth. Combine the remaining 1 and 3/4 cups cream, Nutella, vanilla and salt in a small saucepan. Whisk in the cornstarch mixture and bring to a boil over medium heat. Once the mixture starts to boil, stir constantly until thickened, about 2 minutes. Pour into the crust. Refrigerate until set, at least 3 hours. Top with the reserved hazelnuts.

  • Put the flour and baking powder into a pile on the pastry board. Add the softened butter in pieces in the middle. Mix quickly to make a pile of "crumbs" then add to the crumbs the sugar, yolk and egg, grated lemon zest and a pinch of salt. Mix everything together quickly, forming a ball. Wrap it in a cloth and put it in the fridge to rest for 30 minutes.
  • Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough to a thickness of 5 mm and cut out circles slightly larger than the individual tins that you are going to use.
  • Put the dough into the greased and floured tins. To prevent the tarts from swelling up too much, prick the dough a few times with the prongs of a fork. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 180°C for 8-10 minutes. Afterwards, remove the tarts from the cases and let them cool. Fill the tarts with Nutella® and serve.
