GRANDMA'S OLD-FASHIONED APPLE CRISP
Simple, old-fashioned apple crisp. If you want something simple and homemade on hand, you can double the filling recipe (I use a 5-pound bag of Granny Smith apples) and freeze half of it.

OLD FASHIONED APPLE CRISP
I was first introduced to Apple Crisp when I was a young girl in school. I always loved it, but it wasn't until I got married that I learned how to make it. My mom told me how to season the apples and make the basic crumb topping that goes with so many desserts. It's also wonderful on sweet potato casserole. I hope you enjoy this simple dessert that's perfect in the fall when fresh, local apples are abundant.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spray and 8 X 8 baking dish with cooking spray, set aside.
- Peel and cut apples into slices (they don't have to be uniform). Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Place into prepared baking dish.
- Prepare topping and sprinkle evenly over apples and bake at 375 degrees for about 30 minutes or until golden and apples are bubbly. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.
- TOPPING: In a small bowl, mix flour, salt and sugar. Cut in butter using pastry method until mixture resembles a coarse meal. You may also work in with fingers. Mixture should be about the consistency of wet sand. If it's too wet, add just a little more flour. Sprinkle on top of apples.
OLD FASHIONED APPLE CRISP
This is my mother's recipe and one of my favorites. It's a classic dessert topped with vanilla ice cream. It goes down way too easy!

- Preheat oven to 350 F degrees. Butter an 8x8 baking dish, or spray with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.
- In a mixing bowl, add chopped apples, granulated sugar, 3/4 tsp of the cinnamon and lemon juice. Stir to combine, then transfer to prepared baking dish.
- In a separate mixing bowl, add topping ingredients (brown sugar, oats, flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, salt, and diced cold butter). Use a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the oat mixture, using a slight downward twisting motion, until mixture resembled pea-sized crumbs. - Spread topping over apples in baking dish, and gently pat to even it out. Bake 40-50 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly.
