SERVIETTE/NAPKIN FOLDING, CANDLE IN A WINE GLASS FOLD

My interest in serviette folding was born on a wet day at my Grandmother's house, I was a pre teen and helping her with the ironing and watched while she ironed serviettes into wonderful shapes and neatly stacked them for use. I asked her to show me how and she did. Once you know several folds and people see them, they often have at least one other that you haven't seen before, you gain knowledge of the new one and on it goes. Now that I have already posted all the napkin folds I know, I decided to look on the net for some new ones to learn. This one was called the Candle in a Wine Glass fold and is a mega easy variation of the Basic Roll. So easy, it takes about 20 seconds to make.

Steps:

  • Lay your serviette out flat before you in a diamond shape.
  • Take the point at South and roll it neatly completely up to the North point.
  • Fold the serviette in half and place it into a wine glass.
  • An optional variation would be to insert a serviette/napkin ring over the folded end before putting it into the wineglass.

This one is a cross between the Sydney Opera House fold and a standing Fan and looks good in a water or wine glass.

Steps:

  • Lay your serviette square out flat before you. Fold it in half horizontally.
  • Take the serviette and fold it in half again vertically so that it is now a small square a quarter the size of the original square.
  • Only one corner of the square will have 4 open / loose edges, rotate your square so that it is a flat diamond shape with the open corner pointing upwards. We will call this the North corner.
  • Take the East corner and make an accordion fold all the way to the West corner.
  • Holding it firmly, gently pull out each of the 4 loose edges at the North point, fanning them out from left to right.
  • Roll up the south corner a little to help the fan to keep its shape and place in a water or wine glass.

This one was called the Candle Fan fold and is a mixture of Recipe #241855 and the fan Recipe #241005. Stylish and easy and a mixture of two serviette sorts in a style that will be new to many people who you try it out on.

Steps:

  • Lay your serviette out flat and square before you.
  • Bring the top and bottom right corners into the top and bottom centre of the serviette so that there is a vertical line running down the middle. Repeat with the left top and bottom corners. You should have before you a tall rectangle with a vertical gap running down the middle.
  • Place your finger in the very centre of the serviette where the two flaps meet each other. With your other hand take the top right flap and pull it to the right, going past the top of the rectangle so that it make a triangle shape a little like the flap on a collar. Repeat with the top point on the left side. It now looks like the collar on a shirt with rather a wide neck at the back.
  • The next step involves making a mirror image of the last step at the bottom, if it's easier then carefully turn your serviette around do that the collar is at the bottom upside down and then just repeat the previous step at the top as before. Once all four flaps are completed you will have before you a rectangle that has 4 triangles radiating out from the centre a little like a windmill.
  • Starting at the bottom upside down collar part, take the bottom left and right edges and roll them as tightly as you can up to the centre of the serviette.( I set a glass on mine to keep it there while I did the next step).
  • Turn the entire serviette around to the that roll is at the top and the collar bit of the top half is now upside down at the bottom.
  • Accordion fold the bottom bit up to the centre (it will meet the roll at the middle).
  • Now gather both ends (without letting it all unfold) and the roll should be in the middle.
  • Place it into an empty water or wine glass and fan out the accordion fan bits at each side. So easy!

SERVIETTE/ NAPKIN FOLDING, SET INTO A WINE GLASS

Between the teachings of my Grandmother, an Aunt, my Mother and several restaurants I learned a lot about serviette/ napkin folding. Here's a step-by-step instruction on how to make one of the easiest of them all.. a simple folded on with the napkin ring holding everything in place. Works well with cloth napkins, or larger paper ones. I have included step-by-step photographs to illustrate/supplement the written directions. This one I learned in the Oasis restaurant in tiny township of Omarama, New Zealand.

NAPKIN/SERVIETTE FOLDED FOR BOTTLE SERVICE

Super easy and works very well indeed with both cloth or paper serviettes/napkins. This very basic fold transforms the naked neck of your wine bottles into something elegant and also catches drips. I have included step by step photographs to illustrate / suppiment my written instructions. This fold works best with a smaller napkin and I almost always find that paper ones are the easiest.

Steps:

  • Lay out your square serviette in a single layer before you. Fold it in half horizontally, keeping the folded edge closest to you.
  • Take the top two corners and fold them towards you coming only 1/3 of the way down the serviette, gently crease the new top edge.
  • Take the bottom two corners and fold half way up but so that the upper edge doesn't quite reach the top edge that you just folded.(this makes for a cleaner and neater looking edge) you will now have a very long and thin rectangle shape.
  • Keeping the side that has the join to the inside, put 1/3 of the serviette around the neck of the wine bottle, and bring the longer tail end of the serviette over the other end and tuck it carefully undernieth. tighten carefully around the neck of the bottle.

SERVIETTE/NAPKIN FOLDING, CELEBRATE WITH CANDLES!

Steps:

  • Lay your serviette out flat before you in a diamond shape.
  • Take the corner at South and bring it up to meet the corner at North. You will have before you a triangle shape with the crease at the bottom.
  • Take the two points at North and bend them forward South but only go one third of the way down the serviette. This will make a tiny triangle at the top that faces downwards.
  • Fold the little triangle towards South again, only one third of the main serviette will be showing at the bottom now. Then fold the strip over again towards South so that the top now meets the bottom edge at South. (You should have folded the triangle downwards 3 times in all) This results in a long thin strip that has two little triangle points sticking out at each end.
  • Take hold of the little triangle at the left end of the strip that you have and fold it under and backwards under itself so that the point sticks up (this will be your candle "flame").
  • Now start to roll up the long strip, starting at the end where the left triangle has been folded backwards. Roll the strip up to the end, tucking the last part under and into the roll at the base of your candle.
  • Voila ! a Candle serviette/ Napkin ! -- and how easy was that!

SERVIETTE/NAPKIN FOLDING, FLEUR DE LIS IN A GLASS VERSION1.

Between the teachings of my Grandmother, an Aunt, my Mother and several restaurants I learned a lot about serviette/ napkin folding.. Now that I have already posted all the napkin folds I know, I decided to look on the net for some new ones to learn. This one is almost identical to Fleur de Lis in a Glass Version2, but the method of making it is different and the central point at the top can be considerably higher. Works well with cloth napkins, or larger paper ones. I have included step-by-step photographs to illustrate/supplement the written directions. For neater presentation use ironed napkins for this fold.

Steps:

  • Lay your serviette flat before you in a diamond shape.
  • Take the point at North and fold it down to meet the point at South. You will now have a triangle in front of you where the crease is at the top and the point is facing the South position.
  • Take this South point and fold it to the North, going past the middle centre of the top line so that you now have a strip at the bottom if the serviette and a triangle sticking out at the top of the strip.
  • Turn the serviette carefully around so that it is now vertical and starting at the bottom end of the long strip, accordion pleat all the way to the other end of the strip at the top. Hold firmly so that it keeps its shape.
  • Carefully set the base of the serviette into a wine or water glass (the base is the thicker bit at the bottom) and when you let go you will have a tall pleated triangle at the top and two pleated triangles hanging down at the sides.
  • Arrange the pleats to that they are even and neat.
