Sweet-and-Sour Skillet Glazed Turnips image

Steps:

  • Spread the turnips in a single layer in a large skillet with a lid. Add enough water to cover the turnips halfway and then add the butter and sugar. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to maintain a simmer. Partially cover with the lid and simmer until the turnips are tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Uncover, increase the heat to high and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the liquid almost completely evaporates and the turnips are glazed. Remove from the heat and stir in the vinegar and chives; season with salt and pepper.

Homemade Sweet-and-Sour Pork image

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, vinegar, ketchup and soy sauce. Pour half into a large resealable plastic bag; add pork. Seal bag and turn to coat; refrigerate for 30 minutes. Set remaining marinade aside., Drain and discard marinade from pork. In a large skillet, cook pork in oil for 3 minutes. Add the onion, carrots, green pepper, garlic and ginger; saute until pork is tender. Add reserved marinade. Bring to a boil; cook for 1 minute. Stir in the pineapple. Serve with rice if desired. Freeze option: Cool pork mixture. Freeze in freezer containers. To use, partially thaw in refrigerator overnight. Heat through slowly in a covered skillet, stirring occasionally and adding a little broth or water if necessary. Serve over rice.

  • Combine tomato paste, pineapple juice, raisins, brown sugar, cornstarch, vinegar, ginger, red pepper flakes, and seasoned salt in a medium bowl and set aside.
  • Rinse pork chops and pat dry. Melt butter in a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add chops and brown on both sides, 5 to 8 minutes total. Do not drain the skillet.
