Steps:

  • 1. Pre-heat oven to 350 Melt shortening and chocolate together in a double boiler over hot water and let cool Sift flour with baking powder and salt Beat eggs until light; add sugar, then chocolate mixture, and blend. Add flour, vanilla, and nuts. Mix well. Pour batter into well greased 8 inch square pan. Bake for 30 -35 minutes. Cool and cut into squares Makes 16

½ cup shortening 2 one oz. squares unsweetened baking chocolate ¾ cup flour ½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt 2 eggs 1 cup sugar 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup california walnuts, coarsely cut

BETTER BROWNIES

This is a great recipe for people who are vegan or just looking for a desert that tastes good. You can replace the sugar entirely by doubling the amount of stevia powder. You can also replace half of the all-purpose flour with whole grain flour.

Steps:

  • Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch pan.
  • Mix the cocoa powder, vegetable oil, and water together in a bowl. Stir the stevia and sugar into the mixture. Pour the soy milk and vanilla into the mixture and stir. Add the flour and baking powder; continue stirring until the batter is smooth.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the top is dry and the edges have started to pull away from the sides of the pan, about 35 minutes.
