FUDGY MACAROON BARS

Anyone with a sweet tooth will make a beeline for my dessert tray when these rich squares show up. They're attractive on the platter and delectable with fudge and coconut. -Beverly Zdurne, East Lansing, Michigan

Fudgy Macaroon Bars image

Steps:

  • In a microwave, melt chocolate and butter; stir until smooth. Cool slightly. Stir in the sugar, flour, salt, vanilla and eggs. Spread half of the batter into a greased 13x9-in. baking pan. , In a large bowl, combine the filling ingredients. Spoon over chocolate layer. Carefully spread remaining chocolate mixture over filling. , Bake at 350° for 35-40 minutes or until the sides pull away from the pan. Immediately sprinkle with chocolate chips. Allow chips to soften for a few minutes, then spread evenly over filling. Sprinkle with walnuts. Cool completely before cutting.

Steps:

  • Butter a 9x9 inch dish.
  • Combine sugar, cocoa, butter, milk, vanilla and salt in the top of a double boiler over simmering water. Cook, stirring, until smooth. Remove from heat and beat until mixture loses its gloss. Stir in chopped nuts and pour quickly into prepared pan.
  • Let cool completely before cutting into squares.

Steps:

  • Line a 15x10x1-in. pan with foil; grease foil with 1-1/2 teaspoons butter., In a heavy large saucepan, combine sugar, milk, salt and remaining butter. Bring to a rapid boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Cook 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. , Stir in marshmallow creme until melted. Stir in both chocolates until melted. If desired, stir in walnuts. Immediately spread into prepared pan. Refrigerate until firm. , Using foil, lift fudge from pan. Remove foil; cut fudge into 1-in. squares. Store between layers of waxed paper in airtight containers in the refrigerator.

  • Line 8-inch square pan with foil, with ends of foil extending over sides. Microwave semi-sweet chocolate and 1 cup milk in medium microwaveable bowl on MEDIUM (50%) 1-1/2 min. or until chocolate is almost melted, stirring after 1 min.; stir until completely melted.
  • Add coconut; mix well. Spread onto bottom of prepared pan.
  • Microwave white chocolate and remaining milk in separate microwaveable bowl 1-1/2 min. or until chocolate is almost melted, stirring after 1 min.; stir until completely melted. Drop by tablespoonfuls over semi-sweet chocolate layer; swirl with knife. Refrigerate 2 hours. Use foil handles to lift fudge from pan before cutting into pieces.
