DUTCH COOKIES

This recipe has become a cherished family favorite, and it all began in 1965 with my older brother's 2nd grade teacher sharing it with our mother. Melt-in-your-mouth good! At holiday time, add festive sprinkles on top while chocolate is still soft. Enjoy!

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 F (175 degrees C).
  • Cream together the butter, shortening, sugar and vanilla.
  • Sift together the flour, baking soda and salt. Add to sugar mixture and mix well, being careful not to over mix.
  • Drop heaping teaspoonfuls of dough on ungreased cookie sheet and flatten each with the tines of a fork (dip fork into small bowl of water so that dough doesn't stick to fork). Do this once or twice, depending on the size of cookie and fork.
  • Bake for 13 to 15 minutes. After each pan is removed from oven, carefully place 5 or 6 chocolate chips on top of each cookie while they are still hot. When chocolate is glossy and soft, spread with knife.

DUTCH DAINTIES

I clipped this recipe from the Toronto Star and used to make it quite a bit. I don't know where the name "dutch dainties" comes from. I think of it as a glorified coconut tart. I have substituted chocolate chips for the maraschino cherries with good results. I also have made these in mini-muffin tins (24 servings) for more of a "ccokie sized" serving. Just reduce baking time (I believe 10-14 minutes).

10 FAMOUS DUTCH DESSERTS - INSANELY GOOD RECIPES

Category Desserts, Recipe Roundup
  • Dutch Stroopwafel. This crunchy treat is one of the most well-loved Dutch desserts on the list. At first glance, most people think they’re waffles, but although the texture is the same, they’re much thinner than waffles.
  • Arnhemse Meisjes. You can make these thin, crackling cookies with only five ingredients – puff pastry squares, vanilla sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, and lime zest.
  • Dutch Apple Pie. Apple pie may be as “American” as baseball and pickup trucks, but the Dutch have us beat when it comes to making it. I won’t lie; this pie takes some time to pull together.
  • Dutch Speculaas Cookies. Most people call these speculaas, but to me, they’re just spice cookies. One bite of that sweet cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and white pepper flavor, and you’ll understand why.
  • Oliebollen (Dutch Doughnuts) It’s hard to decide what to love more about these warm, deep-fried delicacies: their incredible taste or how fun it is to say their name.
  • Dutch Letters (S Cookies) Dutch letters, or ‘S’ Cookies as people sometimes call them, are popular in many places worldwide and understandably so. They’re buttery, flaky, and nutty, and they have an excellent filling of almond paste that nearly melts in your mouth.
  • Sweet Dutch Pretzels. Dutch pretzels share the same shape as the Rold Gold Mini Twists you can pick up at any grocery store. However, that’s where the similarities end.
  • Kruidnoten (Dutch Little Spiced Cookies) Kruidnotens and speculaas cookies both share very similar flavors. They’re both traditional Dutch “spice cookies” and share several ingredients – nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger, to name a few.
  • Dutch Butter Cake with Almonds. “Butter cake” may not sound like something that’s super appetizing, but it’s actually pretty incredible. It’s soft, moist, fluffy, and tastes primarily of almonds.
  • Tompouce. This flavorful orange dessert is insanely easy to make, and you’ll only need five ingredients to prepare it! You’ll start with a layer of puff pastry.
