Steps:

  • Cook the beef in a large skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until browned and cooked through, 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Carefully drain excess fat from the pan. Add the onion, bell pepper and garlic and cook until fragrant and the veggies soften, about 3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Stir in the ketchup, hot sauce, vinegar, Worcestershire and brown sugar. Reduce the heat to low and simmer until the veggies are tender and the mixture has thickened, 15 to 20 minutes. If the mixture seems too thick, add 1 to 2 tablespoons water. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  • Preheat the broiler. Place the buns cut-side up on a baking sheet and sprinkle both sides with the cheese. Broil until the cheese is bubbly and melted, 1 to 2 minutes. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture on the bottom halves of the buns, close the sandwiches and enjoy immediately.

1 pound ground beef
1 small sweet white onion, diced (about 1 cup)
1 small green bell pepper, diced (about 1 cup)
3 cloves garlic, minced
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 cup ketchup, preferably Heinz
1 tablespoon vinegar-based hot sauce, preferably Valentina
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons packed light brown sugar
12 potato slider buns
1 cup shredded Cheddar

Steps:

  • Prepare the sloppy joes: In a large saute pan over medium-high heat, combine the canola oil, bell peppers, jalapeno and onion; cook for 5 minutes. Add the beef; cook thoroughly, breaking up the meat as it browns. Add the garlic. Depending on the amount of residual grease, you may need to drain some of the fat from the pan. Deglaze with the red wine, then stir in the remaining sloppy joe ingredients (except the rolls) and season with 1 tablespoon each salt and freshly ground pepper.
  • Reduce the heat and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. If the sauce gets too thick as it simmers, add up to 1 cup water to adjust the consistency. Toast the rolls and set aside.
  • Serve the sloppy joes on the toasted rolls.
