HANUKKAH STAR CHALLAH

When invited to a Hanukkah dinner, I thought of making something appropriate. Finally we decided on a Challah bread shaped as a 6-pointed Star of David.

Steps:

  • Place 1 cup of water, eggs, salt, sugar, bread flour, and yeast into the pan of a bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select the Dough setting, and start the machine.
  • When cycle is completed, remove dough from the machine, and set onto a floured work surface for 15 minutes to rest. Cover dough with a towel or large bowl to prevent drying out.
  • Knead the dough several times, and cut into 6 equal pieces. Roll each piece out into a rope about 10 inches long and 1 inch in diameter.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Lay 3 ropes of bread onto the prepared baking sheet, and pinch ropes together firmly at the ends to form a pointed triangle. Weave 3 more ropes over and underneath each point of the first triangle to make a second, interwoven triangle. Pinch it closed tightly at the edges to make a 6-pointed star. Set the baking sheet in a warm place, and allow to rise until doubled, 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Whisk egg yolk with 1 tablespoon of water, and brush the mixture over the loaf; sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the challah is shiny, golden brown, and sounds hollow when tapped, about 35 minutes.

HAPPY CHANUKAH BREAD MACHINE CHALLAH

This is the first time I made Challah from start to finish in the bread maker. Last year I just made the dough. I left the yeast and eggs out over night to warm up and I think it made all the difference in how this rose up. I live at 5,000 feet and cut back on the yeast, and think I could have cut back even more. I will next time. Here's the recipe as written. I put my ingredients in the order recommended by the machine making sure the yeast and liquids DO NOT TOUCH ONE ANOTHER.

Steps:

  • Heat the water. I used my candy thermometer to make sure the temperature was correct.
  • Add the ingredients in the order given. When you go to put the yeast in, make a tiny well in the flour and put the yeast in there.
  • The settings I used were for a 2 lb. loaf. I used the basic bread setting with a medium crust.
  • Once the bread is done remove it from the pan and cool completely on a wire rack before cutting. Slather with your favourite spread.
  • Enjoy and Happy Chanukah!

1 cup(s) warm water (100-115'f)
2 tablespoon(s) light vegetable oil
2 large eggs plus enough liquid to equal 1/2 cup
4 1/4 cup(s) all purpose flour
1 tablespoon(s) raw sugar
2 teaspoon(s) active dry yeast

Steps:

  • Measure carefully, placing all ingredients except egg yolk, cold water and poppy seed in bread machine pan in the order recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Select Dough/Manual cycle. Do not use Delay cycle.
  • Remove dough from pan, using lightly floured hands. Cover and let rest 10 minutes on lightly floured surface.
  • Grease large cookie sheet. Divide dough into thirds. Roll each third into 13-inch rope. Place ropes side by side; braid ropes gently and loosely, starting at the middle. Pinch ends to seal; tuck ends under braid. Place on cookie sheet. Cover and let rise in warm place about 45 minutes or until double. (Dough is ready if indentation remains when touched.)
  • Heat oven to 375°F. Mix egg yolk and cold water; brush over loaf. Sprinkle with poppy seed. Bake about 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Steps:

  • Place warm water, sugar, honey, vegetable oil, salt, 2 eggs, flour and yeast in the pan of the bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select Dough cycle; press Start.
  • After the machine is done, take the dough out, and place it on a very lightly floured board, punch the dough down, and let rest for 5 minutes.
  • Divide the dough in half. Then divide into 3 equal pieces, roll into ropes about 12 to 14 inches, and braid into a loaf. Do the same with the remaining other half. Gently put the loaves on a greased cookie sheet, mist with water, cover loosely with plastic wrap, and let rise for 1 to 1 1/2 hours in a warm, draft free place, until double in size.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). In a small bowl, beat together 1 egg and 1 tablespoon water.
  • Brush risen loaves with egg mixture. Bake in preheated oven for about 20 to 25 minutes. If it begins to brown too soon, cover with foil.

THE BEST BREAD MACHINE CHALLAH

This recipe originally comes from Kosher by Design by Susie Fishbein. I've been making this challah every week for the last two months, and it makes a delicious, rich challah. I don't use the bread machine method, making the dough in my Kenwood mixer and giving the final knead by hand, then braiding the challah and baking it in the oven. I'm posting this as a bread machine recipe at the request of Miraklegirl. BTW, I don't use all the water called for in the recipe, I usually add a bit at a time until I'm happy with the consistency of the dough.

  • Check dough after it has been mixing for about 12-15 minutes. The dough should stick to the side and pull away cleanly. If dough is too sticky, add more flour 1 tablespoon at a time. (I usually end up adding 1 tablespoon of flour to this dough.) If too dry, add 1 tablespoon of water at a time. See this post about the most important thing you should do when using a bread machine.
