THE BEST HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE

After tasting the pure apple flavor of this homemade sauce, you just might never go back to the store-bought kind. Supermarket applesauce can be loaded with added sweeteners and flavorings. We use only a little sugar, plus lemon juice, salt and cinnamon, providing a balanced flavor and the perfect amount of sweetness.

Steps:

  • Combine the apples, sugar, 1 cup water and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large pot. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook until the apples are very soft, 18 to 20 minutes.
  • Stir in the lemon juice and cinnamon. Let cool for 5 minutes or so, then transfer the apple mixture to a blender, filling no more than halfway. Remove the center cap from the lid and place it on the blender. Cover the lid with a folded kitchen towel to catch splatters and pulse until smooth. Alternatively, puree in the pan with an immersion blender.
  • Transfer the applesauce to a bowl and refrigerate until cool, about 1 hour. Store leftover applesauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

4 pounds assorted apples, such as Golden Delicious, Gala, Honeycrisp or McIntosh (about 8), peeled, cored and chopped
1/4 cup sugar
Kosher salt
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

~ CASSIES CHUNKY APPLESAUCE ~

With Fall comes apple season. My favorite time of the year. I love taking advantage of the abundance of delicious apples available. Making my own applesauce is particularly tops on my list. My family loves it. I used Northern Spy and threw in 1/2 a Granny Smith as we like a tart/sweet sauce. Sweeten to your liking and depending what apples you use may require more or less sugar. I add some raisins, but if not a raisin fan, just leave them out. I hope you try it sometimes, it's too darn easy not to. I served it with a pork roast and mashed potatoes. Yum! Enjoy!

Steps:

  • In a medium saucepan, over medium heat, add apples, cider, sugars, cinnamon and bring to a boil.
  • Once boiling, reduce heat to simmer and continue cooking until apples are tender and liquid is reduced. ( About 20 minutes ) Once tender, I use a potato masher and coarsely mash the apples. Can sprinkle with additional cinnamon or even chopped nuts for a little added texture. Great warm, but equally as good cold. Up to you. A great accompaniment to pork dishes.
  • Enjoy!

2 pound(s) northern spy or your favorite - cored, peeled and chunked - for a sweet / tart sauce, combine apples such as granny smith and mcintosh
3/4 cup(s) apple cider
1/4 cup(s) raisins - optional
1/4 - 1/3 cup(s) sugar or to taste
1 tablespoon(s) brown sugar
1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon(s) cinnamon

RAISIN APPLESAUCE CAKE

This cake is one of my grandfather's favorites. And it seems like he always knows when you're making it-he must have a keen sense of smell! The recipe was passed down through the generations beginning with my great-grandmother. Sometimes I can imagine her making it all those years ago.
