MARGARITA ON THE ROCKS

A successful and upscale Mexican cantina nearby makes the best margaritas I've ever tasted. They look, smell, and taste 'purer' than any others I've had. I always assumed they were using all top-shelf ingredients, until I found out their secret. . . lemon-lime soda! Now I'm able to re-create them at home.

Steps:

  • Rim 2 margarita glasses with salt if desired, and fill with ice. Pour the tequila, sweetened lime juice, triple sec, and lemon-lime soda into a shaker filled with ice, hold your hand firmly over over the top of the shaker so the top doesn't pop off from the carbonated soda, and shake vigorously. Pour into prepared margarita glasses, and serve.

Nutrition Facts : Calories 316.9 calories, Carbohydrate 29.5 g, Fat 0.1 g, Sodium 209.9 mg, Sugar 24.9 g

1 pinch kosher salt for rimming glasses
ice cubes
½ cup silver tequila
¼ cup sweetened lime juice (such as Rose's®)
¼ cup triple sec
¼ cup lemon-lime soda, or to taste

THE PERFECT MARGARITA

Mastering the margarita requires a certain amount of practice, but once you dial-in your perfect ratio, it's a really easy cocktail to replicate. The classic recipe is 3 parts tequila, 2 parts triple sec, and 1 part freshly squeezed lime juice, and you should probably start off pretty close to that, but my personal favorite proportions are 4-3-2.

  • First, make a salt rim for your glass. Cut a notch in the middle of the lime wedge (see video for visual cues) and run it generously around the rim of a rocks glass to wet it.
  • Pour kosher salt onto a small plate and roll the outside of the glass in it so that it sticks to the lime juice. (Don't place the top of the glass perpendicular to the plate, because salt on the inside of the rim will inevitably fall into the glass and make the drink itself salty.)

  • Rim The Glass - Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a 8-10 ounce glass. Dip the rim in the kosher salt on a flat plate. Fill the glass with ice. Set aside. Pro Tip: If you are having more than one margarita (duh!), instead of rimming the glass on the second or third drink simply sprinkle a pinch or two of salt straight into the drink!
  • Make the Margarita - Place a few cubes of ice in a cocktail shaker. Add the fresh squeezed lime juice, Cointreau, agave, and tequila. Shake for about 20-30 seconds.
  • Optional, but recommended- if you like a few bubbles in your Margarita you can top it off with 1-2 ounces of soda water.
