OLD FASHIONED COOKED FROSTING

This is a great old-fashioned, heirloom recipe for a "not too sweet" frosting. Both my mother and grandmother used this.

Old Fashioned Cooked Frosting image

Steps:

  • 1. Whisk together the flour and milk in a small saucepan.
  • 2. Stirring constantly over med-low heat, cook to a thick paste. Let cool completely.
  • 3. Cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy.
  • 4. Beat in the vanilla.
  • 5. Beat in the cooled milk paste until it is the consistency of whipped cream.

1 c whole milk
5 Tbsp butter, unsalted
3/4 c flour
1 c sugar
1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Not too long ago, I found this recipe for a frozen treat we used to eat when we went to Grandma's house. Now, whenever I make it, it reminds me of her. She loved to bake, and so do I.

Old-Fashioned Frozen Vanilla Custard image

Steps:

  • In a heavy saucepan, combine first three ingredients. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. Cool. Pour into chilled ice cube trays without dividers or a shallow pan. Freeze to a mush (do not freeze hard). Whip cream; add vanilla and salt. Fold into partially frozen mixture. Return to trays or pan and freeze.

  • In a large heat resistant bowl, whisk together egg yolks, cornstarch, and sugar until well blended. Slowly pour hot cream mixture over egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly to prevent eggs from scrambling.
  • Return custard mixture back to original sauce pan now set on low heat. Stir for 8-10 minutes or until custard has thickened. Do not bring to a boil as the custard will curdle. Serve warm and refrigerate any leftovers.
