PARMESAN BREAD BOWLS
A fun and unusual way to serve your favorite chili recipes!

Steps:
- Dissolve yeast in warm water in small bowl. Stir in sugar; set aside.
- Mix flour, baking powder, salt and cheese in large bowl. Cut in shortening, using pastry blender or crisscrossing 2 knives, until mixture look like fine crumbs. Stir in yeast mixture and just enough buttermilk so dough leaves side of bowl and forms a ball.
- Place dough on lightly floured surface. Knead about 1 minute or until smooth. Cover and let rise in warm place 10 minutes.
- Heat oven to 375°F. Grease outsides of six 10-ounce custard cups. Place cups upside down in ungreased jelly roll pan, 15 1/2x10 1/2x1 inch. Divide dough into 6 equal parts. Pat or roll each part into 7-inch circle. Shape dough circles over outsides of custard cups. (Do not allow to curl under edges of cups.)
- Bake 18 to 22 minutes or until golden brown. Carefully lift bread bowls from custard cups--custard cups and bread will be hot. Cool bread bowls upright on wire rack.

CRISPY PARMESAN BOWLS
Steps:
- In a large nonstick skillet, spread 1/4 cup cheese thinly and evenly over the bottom to form a 7-inch circle. Put the pan over medium heat and cook until the cheese is bubbling and lightly browned, about 3 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat. Put a small bowl upside down on a cutting board. When the bubbling stops, about 1 minute, carefully remove the disk with a thin metal spatula and drape it over the bowl. Press gently with the spatula so it forms a bowl. Be careful, as it is very fragile. Let cool.
- Remove the Parmesan bowl, put it onto a plate, and fill with Caesar salad. Serve.
PARMESAN GARLIC BREAD
This is a recipe I came up with myself. It is great with most Italian dishes. It can be doubled as needed.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).
- In a small bowl, mix butter, garlic salt, rosemary, basil, thyme, garlic powder and Parmesan cheese.
- Spread each half of the French bread with equal portions of the butter mixture. Sprinkle with additional Parmesan cheese, if desired.
- Place bread halves, crusts down, on a medium baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are very lightly browned.

ITALIAN PARMESAN BREAD
When my grown children come home for visits, they always ask me to make this bread along with their favorite spaghetti dinner. In between times, the easy-to-prepare loaf is a hit at church socials and potluck suppers.

- In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add 2 cups flour, 1/4 cup butter, egg, sugar, salt and seasonings. Beat at low speed until mixed, about 30 seconds; increase speed to medium and continue beating for 2 minutes. Stir in remaining flour and 1/3 cup cheese; beat until smooth. , Cover bowl and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Stir batter 25 strokes. Spread batter into a greased 1-1/2-qt. casserole; brush with melted butter and sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes. , Bake at 350° about 35 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on wire rack 10 minutes before removing from the casserole.

- In bread machine pan, place all ingredients in order suggested by manufacturer. Select dough setting (check after 5 minutes of mixing; add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water or flour if needed)., When the cycle is completed, turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Divide into fourths; shape each into a ball. Place on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes., Bake at 400° for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool. Cut the top fourth off each roll; carefully hollow out bottom, leaving a 1/4-in. shell (discard removed bread or save for another use). Fill with chili, chowder or stew.

These are the cutest, individualized-sized bowls from Betty Crocker. They're make-ahead and great for casual dining. Freeze these little bowls in an airtight freezer bag up to one month. Let them thaw a few hours before serving. If bowls get soggy, place them in a 350ºF oven for a few minutes or until crisp. Fill with chili, thick stews, creamed meat or vegetable mixtures or even savory salads.
