SALTY DOG
The Salty Dog is a Greyhound cocktail with salt - hence the name. Craig Claiborne first brought the recipe to The Times in 1968 for a Fourth of July barbecue feature. While his version calls for adding salt to the drink, other recipes salt the rim of the glass instead; see the variation below.

- Fill a highball glass with ice, and then add the grapefruit juice through a small strainer to remove pulp.

- Spread coarse salt on a small plate. Wet rim of a glass with fresh yellow grapefruit juice; dip rim in salt and add ice to glass. Combine vodka, juice of 1/2 yellow grapefruit, and simple syrup, and pour into glass.

- Rub lime wedge around the rim of a highball glass; dip rim in salt. Set aside., Fill a mixing glass or tumbler three-fourths full with ice. Add gin and grapefruit juice; stir until condensation forms on outside of glass. Pour into prepared glass, straining ice if desired.

Simple recipe especially for those who love vodka. Adult beverage, not for the kiddies! I sometimes use a regular 8 ounce juice glass instead of a highball glass, it depends on the quantity of ice you like.

- In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup water and the honey. Bring to a boil and shut off the heat. Transfer to a bowl to cool. Refrigerate.
- In a medium bowl, combine half of the cucumber slices with the grapefruit segments and some simple syrup. Muddle them by pressing down on them with a whisk to extract the juices and lightly crush the cucumbers. Add the vodka, lime juice, some more simple syrup and 1 cup lightly crushed ice. Pour into 4 rocks glasses and grind a little salt over the top. Alternatively, serve in a pitcher and sprinkle with the salt as you pour the individual drinks.
SALTY DOG HOT DOG

- Toast bun in a dry skillet over medium high heat about 1 or 2 minutes.
- Reduce heat to medium.
- Wrap bacon around hot dog and pan-fry until bacon is crispy and hot dog is cooked through, about 5 minutes.
- Place hot dog in bun, squirt on some yellow mustard, top with pickles.
