TAMARI ROASTED SUNFLOWER SEEDS

A major addiction. I have these all the time at my favorite natural food restaurants around town. Good alone, or on salads, sandwiches, in trail mix, etc. An important note: be certain you start off with fresh sunflower seeds.

Tamari Roasted Sunflower Seeds image

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Toss all the ingredients together thoroughly in a mixing bowl.
  • Arrange and spread the seed mixture on a large baking sheet.
  • Roast for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until sunflower seeds are medium brown on all sides and all the tamari has evaporated. *WATCH* roasting process carefully.
  • Remove from oven and allow to cool. Store in airtight container.

2 tablespoons tamari
1 tablespoon bland oil (corn, safflower, etc.)
1/4 teaspoon salt-free garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt-free onion powder
1/4 teaspoon cayenne (optional)

  • I pour the seeds into a skillet, stirring with a wooden spoon the whole time, for just a few minutes until the seeds begin to "pop". It'll take you back to the "snap-crackle-pop" of your Rice Krispies days.
  • When I hear this and also begin to smell the seeds roasting, I continue to stir for a few more minutes as they begin to turn a bit golden. You've got to watch carefully so as not to burn them!
  • Turn off the heat when they are roasted to your preference, add a pinch of salt-stir-then stir in the coconut aminos.
  • The coconut amino makes them a bit sticky, so once all the seeds are coated I pour them onto a plate to cool, then into a jar for keeping.
