KHRUSTYKY
This crispy, dainty pastry dusted with confectioners' sugar has an eggy flavor similar to cream puffs. I honor my Ukrainian heritage by serving khrustyky on Christmas Eve as part of the traditional feast of 12 dishes. Each dish symbolizes one of the apostles. -Carol Funk, Richard, Saskatchewan

- Ukrainian Old-Fashioned Honey Babka. Old-fashioned honey babka is like a honey cake with cream cheese icing, and yes, it’s just as rich and delicious as it sounds.
- Yabluchnyk (Apple Cake) The name of this phenomenal apple cake may sound like a sneeze, but I promise it tastes unbelievably good. The ingredients are so simple that you probably already have all of them in your kitchen: flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, butter, eggs, cream, cinnamon, and apples.
- Syrnyk (Sweet Ukrainian Easter Cheese) Although it’s much thinner and moister than pound cake, this four-ingredient sweet treat’s appearance and texture will remind you of it, nonetheless.
- Makivnyk (Ukrainian Poppy Seed Roll) The first thing people notice about a Ukrainian poppy seed roll is, of course, its shocking, intense colors. The lovely orangy-brown of the crust is a stark contrast to the roll’s monochromatic insides.
- Ukrainian Christmas Cake (Perekladanets) Despite the “Christmas cake” moniker, perekladanets is a hugely popular Ukrainian dessert, and people make it for special occasions throughout the year.

- Syrnyky. The legend has it that syrnyky are the most ancient Slavic dessert. It’s no wonder – you only need cottage cheese, flour, sugar, and eggs for the basic recipe.
- Nalysnyky. These Ukrainian crepes are just as traditional as syrnyky and also made on the basis of cottage cheese and raisins or pitted cherries (although apple and cinnamon nalysnyky are just as yummy).
- Varenyky with Cherries or Cottage Cheese. We cannot talk about Ukraine and forget varenyky. While everyone would typically think of these as potato- or cabbage-stuffed dumplings, cherry filling is just as great.
- Pampushky. A signature Christmas dessert, Ukrainian donuts are a favorite for having with coffee. The stuffing is up to you: sweetened cherries, poppyseeds, apple jam (or any other jam for that matter).
- Paska. Translated as Easter, this sweet round bread is traditionally baked at Easter and taken to church along with other dishes to be sprinkled with holy water.
