YUMMY SLOPPY JOES

We love a homemade sloppy joe recipe and this one is sweet and tangy. The mix has a lot of texture and flavor from all the fresh veggies. Top on a soft roll for a hearty and filling family dinner. Great for a weeknight when short on prep time. Very yummy!

1/4 c ketchup
2 Tbsp brown sugar
1 Tbsp white vinegar

8 sandwich buns, split

THE BEST SLOPPY JOES

This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.

2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 medium onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 pound lean ground beef
12 ounces (1 1/3 cup) tomato sauce
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon paprika
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 hamburger buns, toasted

BBQ SLOPPY JOE SLIDERS

For years I just made my Mother's Sloppy Joe recipe. Then one day I decided to try it with some BBQ sauce. My family loved it so well that's the only way they want it fixed. It is super quick and easy to prepare. It goes great with slaw and chips.

Steps:

  • Brown ground round; drain off any excess fat. (Ground round is so lean there usually isn't any excess fat).
  • Stir in ketchup, BBQ sauce, mustard, and onions. Simmer covered on low heat for 10 minutes. Stir frequently to prevent sticking. If your mixture seems too thick, add a little extra BBQ sauce or a Tablespoon or two of water.
  • Using heaping Tablespoons put the meat on the buns. Optional: If you prefer, you can mayonnaise the buns first; or simply put the mayonnaise out for everyone to add according to their preference).

1 pound(s) ground round
1/2 cup(s) ketchup
1/2 cup(s) bbq sauce, (i like kc masterpiece, original)
1 - 2 tablespoon(s) prepared mustard
1 teaspoon(s) onion flakes, dehydrated
12 - sliders, or other mini buns

Steps:

  • 1. In a large skillet, over medium heat, begin browning ground beef. When half way through add garlic, diced veggies, and seasonings through the ground mustard. Saute until the beef is completely browned and veggies are opaque.
  • 2. Add the remaining ingredients breaking up the stewed tomatoes into smaller bite-sized pieces; combine well.
  • 3. Simmer the sloppy joe mixture for 30-40 minutes on low heat to marry flavors together. Or, transfer this mixture into a Crock Pot and slow cook on low for 1-2 hours.

1 clove garlic, minced
1 medium yellow onion, chopped
3 medium celery, diced

1 pinch red pepper flakes
3 Tbsp chili powder
1 Tbsp onion powder
1 Tbsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp ground mustard
2 Tbsp Dijon mustard
1 Tbsp yellow mustard
2 Tbsp chili sauce
1/2 c catsup

BAKED SLOPPY JOE WITH BISCUITS

This is a fantastic rustic sloppy joe recipe. It's super easy to make the sauce - in fact, you probably have the ingredients in your kitchen. Cooking the biscuits on top is genius. It's wonderful to serve the sloppy joes with a big biscuit on top. As you cut into it with a fork, scoop up some of the sloppy joe, and eat it all...

Baked Sloppy Joe With Biscuits image

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat a cast-iron Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
  • 2. Chop the onion.
  • 3. Place the ground meat and the onion in the Dutch oven.
  • 4. Brown the mixture until the meat is completely cooked and the onion is soft and translucent. Drain any fat off the meat before continuing.
  • 5. After the meat mixture has been browned and drained, add the flour, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, salt, pepper, and water. If you have a favorite Sloppy Joe recipe, you can certainly use it as the meat mixture for this meal in place of the recipe described to this point. Whatever meat mixture you are using, stir well and bring the mixture to a boil. Be sure the mixture is very moist (but not watery) as it will be baked along with the biscuits.
  • 6. Take the meat mixture off the heat and arrange the refrigerator biscuits evenly over the top of the meat mixture.
  • 7. Bake, uncovered, according to the directions on the biscuit package until the biscuits are golden brown. If you are cooking outdoors with hot briquets and a 12" camp-style Dutch oven (one that has three legs and a lid that is concave and has a lip to hold the briquets in place), place 8 briquets under the cast-iron Dutch oven and 24 on the lid. Bake, covered, until the biscuits are golden brown. If you have never used your cast iron Dutch oven outdoors with briquets, this is a great recipe for starters. It is very easy to get wonderful results! This can also be made in a 12-inch cast iron skillet or an enamel coated Dutch oven.

2 lb lean ground beef or ground turkey (or a combination of the two)
1 c chopped onion
4 Tbsp all-purpose flour
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 c ketchup
2 tsp salt (or to taste)
1/4 tsp pepper (or to taste)
1 1/2 c water (more if needed)
1 pkg refrigerator biscuits (my preference is the large buttermilk variety)

STROMBOLI JOES

Everyone in the Test Kitchen loved this Italian twist on the classic sloppy joe. The amount of Italian seasoning in the meat mixture is just right and pairs perfectly with the garlic butter and cheese on the bread. This is a cinch to make and will be a crowd pleaser. A great dinner recipe for a busy night or for your next...
