FAMILY-FAVORITE CRAN-APPLE RELISH
I made this relish for first time 53 years ago when I was 14. My mother wasn't able to prepare Thanksgiving dinner that year, so I was the cook for our family of 12! We all liked this dish so much that it became our family's traditional cranberry relish.

APPLE-CRANBERRY RELISH
This fresh, ruby-colored cranberry apple relish is sweet and tangy, and the celery gives it a terrific crunch. At our house, it's a holiday menu mainstay since it's so pleasant with poultry and pork. -Edith McFarland, Willits, California

CRAB APPLE AND CRANBERRY RELISH
If you bring cranberry relish to the Thanksgiving table this year, you'll be eating a food that long predates the holiday. Members of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) have been harvesting sasumuneash (sour berries) on Martha's Vineyard, MA, for thousands of years, using them to flavor and preserve meat, dye textiles and prevent illnesses. Today the berries are still central to Aquinnah Wampanoag culture: Tribe members celebrate Cranberry Day in the fall with traditional foods like chowder, quahogs, venison and, of course, cranberries. Stay true to the berry's native roots this year and try a relish recipe from the National Museum of the American Indian.

Add 1/4 cup cranberry juice, taste and add more sugar if necessary. Refrigerate, covered, for up to 3 days.
CRANBERRY SAUCE WITH APPLES
Fall flavors! Traditional cranberry sauce with the addition of Granny Smith apples. The pectin in the apples helps the sauce to set and brings another layer of flavor to a classic recipe. Make it several days in advance to relieve some of the holiday stress.

CRANBERRY-APPLE-ORANGE RELISH
This recipe was in an email today from America's Test Kitchen. Just in time.... "A blend of sweet, tart, bitter, and spicy, this cranberry relish adds spark to the Thanksgiving spread as well as all manner of dishes beyond the holiday meal. When we made this relish, here's what we discovered: Test Kitchen Discoveries Add an orange--peel and all--for a deep citrus flavor and a mild bitterness to temper the relish's sweetness. Use the food processor to grind the ingredients together. Pulse the mixture to a coarse cornmeal texture so that it retains some bite."
