DOG FOOD FOR PICKY EATERS
This is the recipe we use to feed our very picky Yorkie. Some people say you should only use dog food to feed you dog, it's healthier for them. If you've ever had a small dog that gets low blood sugar, you know this is not always possible. You may want to check with your vet for a daily vitamin supplement.

HOMEMADE DOG FOOD GRAVY
I only feed our dogs dry dog food and have always checked to make sure what I feed them is a top quality, balanced dog food. Our dogs do great on it. When I adopted my Grandmother's dog I had every intention of feeding her the same, but everyday she would hardly eat any of it (because my grandmother would feed her what she ate and never bought dog food). She lost a lot of weight, which at first was good, but when it didn't stop and she was becoming underweight I became concerned. At that point I bought some canned food and would mix a little bit with some water to coat her dry food. It worked, she began eating the proper amount of food. I began making gravy, just like the kind you can buy, for the conveince of how well it mixed with dry food and for how much less it costs than buying dog gravy. This homemade recipe is best for dogs because it utilizes a balanced, pre-made dog food. Be sure not to give your dogs anything with onions, garlic or salt in them, these can be toxic to dogs. Many homemade dog food recipes out there include onions, garlic or salty broths in them. Always check with your vet if you are concerned with anything in your dog's diet.

Steps:
- In a sauce pan combine the can of dog food and 10 oz of water. Begin to heat the mixture.
- In a bowl combine the tablespoon of water and tablespoon of cornstarch until smooth and stir it into the dog food mixture.
- Bring the ingredients to a boil stirring constantly. Boil until thickened (about 1 minute) continuing to stir.
- Allow mixture to cool at room temperature for about 10 - 15 minutes. Once cooled pour into a blender and blend until there are no more chunks. If the mixture is too thick, add more water one tablespoon at a time. The mixture can then be stored in a hot sauce or ketchup bottle. Follow the storage and best used by date on the can of dog food used, most should be refrigerated.
- Use about 1 tablespoon of gravy for every 1/2 to whole cup of dry dog food.

GREEN BEAN DIET FOR DOGS
Posted in honor of Woody, our red-headed stepchild lab mix! One day our vet said, "Your dog is fat!" This is the "diet" she prescribed for Woody, and it worked!!! Woody safely and gradually lost 18 lbs over about a year. The best part is that he thought he was getting "people food" every day - he never even knew he was on a diet!

Steps:
- Check with your vet to see what amount of dry dog food your dog should eat daily. For a lab mix, it is exactly one cup, two times a day. Don't buy special dog food, just use whatever kind your dog likes.
- Open the can of green beans and add half of the juice and half of the beans to one cup of the dry dog food at breakfast time. No need to heat it!
- The green beans add a healthy dose of fiber to your dog's meal, which makes him feel full. Plus, the dog thinks he's getting something special - people food!
- Give the other half of the can with the second cup of food for supper.

DROOG'S DIABETIC DOG FOOD WITH VITAMIN THERAPY
Please refrain from commenting unless you have read the directions and full intent of the recipe and have a firm grasp of canine diabetes and insulin dependent dogs. COMMENT on COMMENTS: This mixture is ADDED to prescription dog food diet as stated in the directions. It is not meant to replace dog food. It was developed by our VETERINARIAN and NUTRITIONIST as an additive to the prescription food that is not specifically formulated for a diabetic. It makes NUMEROUS servings - it is not meant for a whole meal!!!!!! Your dog has been diagnosed with diabetes; you are scared, frustrated and overwhelmed. I can relate. If your faithful pet has been in the hospital with Ketoacidosis and has just returned home you may find yourself frantic as your pet refuses to eat. The refusal to eat is normal, they just don't feel good. If you cannot get your pet to eat please DO NOT administer insulin. Your pet needs to be enticed to eat, try feeding from your hand. The prescription food may be another problem. Pets usually hate it and it really is not the healthiest food. Follow the guidelines below (along with your vet) to come up with a meal and vitamin therapy plan to fit your dog's new needs. The vitamins mentioned are particularly needed for diabetics, there are certainly more vitamins than listed in the food source. This meal plan was designed by a NUTRITIONIST and VETERINARIAN for a 90 pound DIABETIC dog, if your dog is smaller you will have to decrease the vitamins and food allotment by weight. Feel free to zmail me with any questions or for more information. This meal plan is designed for dogs RECEIVING INSULIN along with its meals TWICE a day. My dog's insulin requirements drastically reduced and he is active, beautiful, happy and healthy! Please check blood regularly when switching as you pets insulin requirements may drop as well. Good Luck! You can do it! We are on year three!!! *********** UPDATE: Sadly, Droog went to the rainbow bridge this year. He lived with diabetes for the last four years of his life and left us 4 days before his 16th birthday. Droog was a Chocolate Lab whose smile could light up a room and had an amazing propensity to heal heartache. We miss him very much, but diabetes did not end his life, age did... and he lived a full and happy life and touched the hearts of many.

Steps:
- Place Beef, Liver, Garlic, broccoli, green beans, spinach and water in a baking dish and bake at 350 for about 20 minutes, or until beef is just barely pink in the center. Put pan juices in a jar and save for pouring on top of food.
- In a large mixing bowl combine the above mixture with the cooked Kashi, Barley and hard boiled egg; put in container with lid and store in refrigerator.
- Mix 1/2 - 3/4 cup of heated mixture with 1 1/2 cups of Prescription dog food; spoon in pumpkin and vitamins (my dog will eat the vitamins without breaking or mashing)- (1 Opti-All tablet (Nutrition for the Eyes of Diabetics),1 B Complex with B12,1 B5,1 B6-pyridoxine alpha-ketoglutarate (improves glucose tolerance dramatically), 1Flax Seed & Cod liver Oil Supplement without PABA (source of D, Selenium, B1, Vanadium), 1 50mg Chromium Picolinate(plays a role in the management of diabetes)and 1/2 Scoop Nutro vitamin supplement and pour chicken broth over mixture and serve to your faithful friend.
- Your pet should surprise you and readily eat all that is offered; This recipe saved my sanity and my dog's health!; Your dog should be looking good and back to his old self in a few weeks (considering if you have him or her regulated); Good Luck!
- If your dog is smaller divide his weight by 90 for correct amounts.
- Water from a can of tuna can also be used over the top of the food as an enticement.

Steps:
- Blend thoroughly and add enough plain flour to make the mix 'rollable'. Press into scone trays or similar, score the top with a knife into the size pieces you want (little pieces for small dogs, larger for your big guys) and bake in a slow oven until the biscuit is quite dry. I find the dogs just love them, they contain all the goodies they need and are also very handy for traveling. I actually add a few capsules of fish oil and empty capsules of glucosamine into my mix as my husky has arthritis in his knees. It helps her tremendously. Just break up the pieces when cooked and cool and store in airtight containers. Get a few trays done and freeze some also.
