GRANDMA'S SUGAR COOKIES

This is one of my great-grandmother's recipes that I received years ago from one of my great-aunts. We bake these cookies for holidays and other special occasions. -Kristy Deloach, Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Grandma's Sugar Cookies image

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cream the sugar, butter, vanilla and salt. Add eggs and mix well. Combine the flour, baking powder and baking soda; add to creamed mixture. Chill until firm, about 1 hour., On a floured surface, roll dough to 1/4-in. thickness. Cut shapes with cookie cutters; place on greased baking sheets. Bake at 375° for 7-12 minutes (depending on size) or until light golden brown. Remove to wire racks to cool completely., In a large bowl, combine the confectioners' sugar, extract and enough milk to achieve desired consistency. Tint with food coloring. Decorate cookies as desired.

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) .
  • Over a large bowl, sift together all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, sugar. Cut in butter and blend with a pastry blender until mixture resembles cornmeal. Stir in lightly beaten egg, cream, and vanilla. Blend well. Dough may be chilled, if desired.
  • On a floured surface, roll out dough to 1/8 inch thickness. Sprinkle with sugar; cut into desired shapes. Transfer to ungreased baking sheets.
  • Bake for 6 to 8 minutes, or until delicately brown.

Steps:

  • In a mixing bowl, cream together sugar and butter until fluffy.
  • Add eggs and vanilla; beat well.
  • Stir together dry ingredients; gradually add to creamed mixture until completely blended.
  • Cover and chill for at least 30 minutes.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness.
  • Cut with various shaped cookie cutters dipped in flour.
  • Transfer cookies to ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Bake at 350° for 10-12 minutes.
  • Cool on wire racks.
  • Frosting: Mix together sugar, butter, vanilla and milk until desired degree of spreading consistency; add milk if you want thinner frosting.
  • Add food coloring to obtain desired color.
  • Spread frosting over cookies and decorate with sprinkles.

Steps:

  • Cream together butter and sugar.
  • Blend in egg.
  • Sift together salt, baking powder, and flour.
  • Add to mixture.

Steps:

  • Mix cream cheese and butter well in large bowl until well blended and creamy.
  • Add in flour slowly, beating well after each addition. Roll dough into 1-inch balls and wrap well in cellophane. Store in fridge overnight.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C).
  • Roll out dough balls flat and place a 1/2 teaspoon full of the jam in the center. Fold sides over and place on ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Bake for 13-15 minutes until brown and the jam starts to bubble hard. Cool for 3 minutes and place on cooling rack. Sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired.

Steps:

  • 1. Cream Shortening, sugar, and eggs together until light and foamy.
  • 2. Sift flour, salt, and baking powder together.
  • 3. Mix flour mixture with egg mixture; add orange juice. Mix until smooth. (If mixture is dry add a small amount of cold water to moisten)
  • 4. Chill then roll and cut with cookie cutters. Bake on a cookie sheet for 5-6 minutes at 350.
  • 5. FOR THE ICING
  • 6. Combine powdered sugar, milk, 1 tablespoon butter, corn syrup and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla in small mixer bowl; mix until powdered sugar is moistened.
  • 7. Beat at medium speed until smooth, adding additional milk if necessary, to reach desired glazing consistency. Tint with food color, if desired.

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In a large bowl, cream the brown sugar, white sugar, eggs, and the shortening. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Alternate adding the buttermilk with the dry ingredients.

  • Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, corn syrup, orange zest and cold water. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger and cloves; gradually beat into creamed mixture. Divide dough in half. Shape each into a disk; wrap in plastic.   • In the bowl of a stand mixer using the paddle attachment, or in a large bowl using a hand mixer, cream together the margarine with the sugar and powdered sugar until well blended. Add the eggs, one at a time, until combined, then beat in the vanilla. Add the oil and flour mixture, one-fourth of each at a time, until combined to form a dough. Cover and refrigerate the dough until well-chilled, at least 2 hours.
  • Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Take a heaping tablespoon of dough and roll it into a ball. Place the ball on a cookie sheet and press down with the bottom of a glass dipped in sugar to flatten the cookie. Repeat with the remaining dough, spacing the cookies about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake the cookies until set and lightly colored on the edges, about 10 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
