HOMEMADE CHEX® PARTY MIX

This homemade snack mix recipe my mom has had since it originated in the 1940s. This was always a holiday favorite at our house. So much better than the newer versions with a richer flavor with the extra butter. This is a very hard-to-find recipe so I thought I'd share. Great to put in tins and give away. I always quadruple the recipe and store extra in freezer. Store in an airtight container or large zip-top bags.

Homemade Chex® Party Mix image

Steps:

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C).
Melt butter, Worcestershire, garlic salt, and celery salt over low heat in a medium saucepan until butter has dissolved, 3 to 5 minutes.
Combine rice cereal, wheat cereal, corn cereal, oat cereal, mixed nuts, and pretzel sticks in a large mixing bowl. Pour butter mixture over and gently stir to coat all of the pieces. Transfer mixture to a large roasting pan.
Bake in the preheated oven until golden, about 2 hours, stirring gently every 15 minutes.
Remove from the oven and let cool completely, about 1 hour. Store in airtight containers.

4 cups toasted oat cereal (such as Cheerios™)
1 pound mixed nuts
1 (12 ounce) package thin pretzel sticks

This is essentially the recipe on a box of Chex, adjusted to my taste. I like extra seasoning, a kick from hot sauce, and a few other adjustments. I also leave out the bagel chips; they just don't seem very Chex Mix-y to me.

Steps:

Preheat oven to 250°F.
In ungreased large roasting pan, melt butter in oven.
Stir in seasonings.
Gradually stir in remaining ingredients until evenly coated.
Bake one hour, stirring every 15 minutes.
Spread on paper towels to cool, about 15 minutes.
Store in an airtight container.

Mom's Chex Mix image

Steps:

Mix up dry ingredients in a large wok or casserole dish.
Mix up seasoning seperately, then pour over the top of the dry ingredients.
Bake at 250 for 2 hours, stirring occasionally (approx every 1/2 hour).

SOCCER CHEX® MIX

This is a variation of a snack mix. I have had so many requests for this from our school's soccer team, that it has now become our soccer snack mix. Sometimes I add a few extra bagel chips once the mix is done cooking because that is our favorite part.

Soccer Chex® Mix image

Steps:

Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C).
Mix butter, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, and onion powder in a bowl.
Combine rice cereal squares, corn cereal squares, wheat cereal squares, pretzels, goldfish crackers, bagel chips, and peanuts in a bowl.
Mix about 1/4 the cereal mixture with 1/4 the butter mixture in a separate bowl until coated; continue adding more cereal mixture and more butter mixture until cereal mixture is fully coated in butter mixture. Pour onto a baking sheet.
Bake in the preheated oven, stirring every 15 minutes, until butter mixture is baked into cereal mixture, about 1 hour.

Place butter in bottom of roasting pan in preheating oven, set to 250ºF. Allow butter to melt completely, about 5 minutes or so.
Once butter has melted, remove pan from oven and add Worcestershire sauce and seasonings, stir to combine. Add in cereal, pretzels and nuts stirring really well until sauce has coated mixture. Stir really well using spatula, getting in all of the corners of the pan.
Bake chex mix for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Allow chex mix to cool completely before storing. TIP: Spread out chex mix in large baking sheets so it’s in one layer to speed up cooling process.
