Steps:

  • Directions 1. Warm the milk in a small saucepan until it bubbles, then remove from heat. Mix in the 4 tablespoons butter; stir until melted. Let cool until lukewarm. 2. Pour milk mixture into bread machine pan. Add 2 eggs, 1/2 cup sugar, vanilla extract, 4 cups bread flour, yeast and salt. Choose Dough setting; press start. 3. When dough is finished mixing, leave it in the bread machine pan and cover with a towel. Let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes. 4. Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal pieces and form into loaves. Place the loaves into two lightly greased 9x5 inch loaf pans. Cover the loaves with a damp cloth and let rise until doubled in volume, about 40 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 5. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup sugar, 1/4 brown sugar and 1/3 cup flour. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs; set aside. In a separate bowl, beat together 1 egg and 1 tablespoon water. 6. Brush loaves of risen bread with the egg wash and then sprinkle on crumb topping. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes, until golden brown.

4 tablespoons butter
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup white sugar

3 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup white sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup bread flour
1/4 cup butter
1 egg
1 tablespoon water

Steps:

  • Dissolve yeast packages in 1 cup of warm water; set aside.
  • Bring milk to a boil. Remove from heat; add remaining 1 cup water, butter, and 2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon of salt; stir until butter melts. Pour in sugar and stir until dissolved.
  • When milk mixture has cooled to lukewarm, stir in dissolved yeast.
  • In a separate bowl, beat eggs until combined. Whisk milk mixture into eggs. Gradually add 5 pounds of flour. Transfer dough to a floured work surface, and use a serrated knife to divide dough in half. Shape each half into a ball and place the dough in two large oiled bowls. Cover with greased plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for about 1 1/2 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
  • Once risen, turn dough out onto a well-floured surface and divide into 6 equal portions. Shape the dough into balls. (Dough will be very sticky and soft at this point.) Keep the dough covered with greased plastic wrap while you divide one dough ball into 3 pieces. Shape the dough into three ropes, braid together, and place on a lightly greased baking sheet or parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining loaves. You should be able to fit two loaves per baking sheet.
  • Bake loaves in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until hollow-sounding when tapped on top. Let cool, and enjoy!

  • Polish Potato Bread. If you’re looking to cut back on your daily carb intake, Polish potato bread may not be the way to go. As the name implies, it combines two very carb-heavy things: potatoes and bread.
  • Polish Onion and Poppy Seed Rolls. If you’re in the mood for something much more complex and with a lot more flavor, try these onion and poppy seed rolls instead.

  • Povitica (Polish Walnut Bread) This yeast-free bread has an amazing flavor that combines the nuttiness of walnuts with the sweetness of cinnamon, brown sugar, and vanilla.
  • Cheese Babka. Cheese babka is half cake, half bread, and 100% wholly delicious. It has an extremely sweet and buttery crumb topping, and the bread itself is tasty, too.
  • Polish Chalka Crumble Bread. This crumbly bread combines the light sweetness of vanilla with bright, vibrant bursts of candied orange flavoring. Like the babka Easter bread above, people traditionally serve it on holidays.
  • Obwarzanek Krakowski (Polish Bagels) Also called the Krakow pretzel or Krakow bagel, the Obwarzanek Krakowski may not look like any pretzel or bagel that you’ve ever had.
