Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Spray bottom only of 13x9-inch pan with cooking spray. Make cake batter as directed on box. With rubber spatula, fold in candy sprinkles. Pour batter into pan.
  • Bake as directed on box for 13x9-inch pan. Cool completely, about 1 hour.
  • In small bowl, mix frosting and 1/8 teaspoon green food color until well blended. Spread frosting over cake. To form witch's hat, insert waffle cone at an angle into top center of cake until rounded edge is level with surface of cake. Tip of cone should be raised about 2 inches directly above top edge of cake pan.
  • With toothpick make 5 inch long oval outline of witch's face directly below "hat". Immediately drop 8 drops green food color randomly over surface of frosting, avoiding "witch's face"; swirl with knife.
  • Using ribbon tip, frost "witch's hat" with black icing; add a "brim" around the base of the "hat" and frost small areas below her face to look like a cape.
  • Cut and shape gumdrops as desired to look like eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth, hat buckle and cape button. Cut candy corn into smaller pieces and add to look like teeth. Use drawing tip in black icing to draw witch's hair. Store loosely covered.

Steps:

  • Prepare the chocolate cake according to the package directions in two 8-inch cake pans and let cool completely.
  • Spray an 8-inch bowl with cooking spray. Line it with plastic wrap as neatly as possible and spray the wrap with cooking spray. Put in the freezer until very cold.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment and spray with cooking spray. Microwave the chocolate in a medium microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring in between each, until melted, about 3 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes.
  • Cut off 1 inch from the chocolate ends of 8 biscuit sticks, so you have 8 short and 8 regular-size sticks total. In same-length pairs, dip the chocolate ends into the melted chocolate and lay them on the prepared baking sheet so that they overlap slightly in the shape of a V. Refrigerate until set.
  • Stir the coconut oil into the remaining chocolate.
  • Remove the prepared bowl from the freezer and brush the inside with 1/4 cup of the chocolate, then refreeze until firm, about 10 minutes. Repeat 4 more times, each time making sure the chocolate goes all the way to the rim of the bowl and doesn't pool in the bottom. Freeze until solid, about 30 minutes.
  • Put one cake layer in the bowl of a food processor and pulse to fine crumbs. Add the frosting and pulse until it just comes together. Form into a ball that is slightly flattened on the bottom where it will sit on the platter, and freeze for 30 minutes. Remove from the freezer and brush to coat with the chocolate mixture. Refreeze for 15 minutes, then repeat 2 more times. On the final time, affix the eyes to the ball in the shape of a horseshoe. Attach a small round piping tip (1S or 2) to the tube of red decorating icing, and outline each eye with icing.
  • Fill the chocolate-lined bowl with the marshmallows. Top with the remaining cake layer and then flip it out onto a large serving platter. Remove the plastic wrap from the chocolate dome. Arrange the head so it touches the chocolate dome body. Drizzle the body with the remaining chocolate mixture and sprinkle with the chocolate sprinkles. Make a black widow marking by piping a red hourglass on the upper third of the body close to the head. Sprinkle it with red sanding sugar. Position 4 biscuit stick legs on each side of the body, making sure the 2 shorter ones go in the middle; gently push the legs into the dome about 1 inch.
  • When ready to serve, heat the strawberry topping in a small saucepan over medium heat until it boils. Slowly pour it over the spider's body to reveal all the eggs inside. Then run, screaming for your life.

One 15.25-ounce box chocolate cake mix (plus required ingredients)
Nonstick cooking spray, for the bowl and parchment
16 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
16 chocolate cream-covered biscuit sticks, such as Pocky
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1/3 cup chocolate or vanilla frosting
6 candy eyes
1 tube store-bought red decorating icing
Red sanding sugar, for decorating
3 cups mini marshmallows
2 tablespoons chocolate sprinkles
One 11.75-ounce jar strawberry ice cream topping

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. Line bottoms of 3 greased 8-in. round baking pans with parchment; grease parchment. In a large bowl, cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in melted chocolate and vanilla. Combine flour, baking soda and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with sour cream, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in water., Pour into prepared pans. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 40-45 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes before carefully removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely., For frosting, in a large bowl, beat butter until smooth. Gradually beat in confectioners' sugar, vanilla, salt and enough milk to reach desired consistency; remove 1-1/2 cups frosting and set aside. Tint remaining frosting with green gel food coloring until desired color is reached. Tint reserved frosting with black food coloring., If cake layers have rounded tops, trim with a serrated knife to make level. Place 1 cake layer on a serving plate; spread with 2/3 cup frosting. Repeat layers. Top with remaining cake layer. Frost top and sides of cake., For decoration, place melted candy coating in piping bag fitted with a small round tip; pipe witch hat shapes onto waxed paper. Let stand until set. Top cake with assorted sprinkles. Place black frosting in piping bag fitted with large star tip; pipe onto top of cake. Just before serving, gently stand 1 witch hat on top of cake. Adhere remaining witch hats and black pearls to sides of cake by gently pressing into frosting.

16 STUNNING (AND SPOOKY) HALLOWEEN CAKE IDEAS AND …

From scarymommy.com
Estimated Reading Time 5 mins
  • Upside Down Bat Cake. If you’ve ever had an actual bat get into your house, you know it is neither fun nor festive, regardless of the time of year. But that doesn’t mean you can’t bake one!
  • Pumpkin Cake. If you’re new to making 3D cakes, might we suggest starting with the humble pumpkin? You’ll still have all the fun (and challenges) of working in three dimensions, but the round shape will be a little simpler than a creature with multiple appendages.
  • Haunted House Cake. If you’ve made a gingerbread house before, why not try its Halloween equivalent? This is another case of being able to keep the cake relatively simple (if you want) or going all-out like this 3D haunted house cake from Martha Stewart.
  • Coffin Cake. Will everyone be a fan of a cake that looks like a coffin? Probably not. But what better way to stick it to death and acknowledge our own mortality than by digging into a 3D Halloween cake in the shape of someone’s eternal resting place?
  • Monster Cake. Monsters come in all different shapes and sizes, so even if you sort of mess up a monster 3D cake, you can always say that that’s how the monster is supposed to look.
  • Spider Cake. If you’re not ready to take on a monster, you can always make a 3D Halloween cake in the shape of a spider. This one is also on the simpler side, only requiring some sort of round-ish cake component, and then sticking eight objects that can double as appendages on the sides.
  • Ghost Cake. Sure, some ghosts can be scary, but others like Casper the Friendly Ghost and the one featured in this 3D Halloween cake are more cute than creepy.
  • Skull Cake. Technically, we all walk around with skulls all day, every day, so this 3D skull cake doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to Halloween time.
  • Jack Skellington Cake. If you’re a fan of the class movie, “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” you probably won’t resist attempting this 3D Jack Skellington cake.
  • Frankenstein Cake. OK, fine, yes, it’s a “Frankenstein’s monster” cake, but whatever you call it, this 3D Halloween cake is sure to please everyone in the family.
