Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook the beef, cabbage, onion, celery and green pepper over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, lemon juice, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt and pepper. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes or until cabbage is tender. Spoon 1/2 cup onto each roll.

Steps:

  • Cook and stir the meat, onion and celery in a large skillet until the meat is brown.
  • Drain off the excess fat.
  • Stir in the cabbage, green pepper, catsup, water, salt, and mustard and heat to boiling, stirring occasionally.
  • Reduce the heat and cover.
  • Simmer until the vegetables are tender, about 25 minutes.
  • Spoon the mixture onto the bottom halves of the buns and top with the remaining halves.
  • NOTE: For Sloppy Joes, omit the cabbage and salt.

Adapted from an allrecipes.com recipe. My version is a bit healthier, using ground turkey, unsweetened ketchup and sugar substitute. You can certainly substitute beef and real sugar and it would be just as tasty. We like a sweeter sloppy so I usually add more sweetener for us. Enjoy in good health!

Steps:

  • Spray treat a large non-stick skillet. Add turkey and vegetables. Cook over medium heat until meat is cooked through and vegetables are starting to tender.
  • In a small bowl, stir together the remaining ingredients. Stir into the turkey and vegetables, mixing well. Cover and simmer for about 10 minutes.

1 1/4 lbs extra- lean ground turkey
1/4 cup green pepper, chopped (2 oz)
2 cups green cabbage, finely shredded
1 medium onion, chopped (3 oz)

  • In a large skillet add the butter to the pan on medium high heat and cook the cabbage until crisp on both sides, stirring occasionally (about 8-10 minutes).
  • Remove the cabbage and add the beef and onions, cooking well, breaking it apart but leaving some chunks about the size of a raspberry or small grape (don't crush the heck out of it, the larger crumbles will help give the sandwich stability).
  • Cook until well browned (5-6 minutes), then add in half the cooked cabbage, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce, beef broth and cornstarch before adding it to the pan along with the cooked beef and stirring well.
  • Continue cooking until the sauce starts to evaporate and the mixture becomes "sloppy" (about 5-6 minutes).
