BEST SUBSTITUTE FOR CHINESE FIVE SPICE – SIMPLE SWAPS

From authorityhealthmag.com
Estimated Reading Time 7 mins
  • Homemade Chinese Five-Spice Powder. It isn’t hard to make a five-spice blend. Just combine cinnamon, clove, and Szechuan peppercorns along with anise and fennel.
  • Garam Masala And Star Anise. It was a revelation for me to learn that “garam masala,” an Indian spice blend, is almost a replica of Chinese 5 spice powder except for the differences in a few minor ingredients.
  • Star Anise And Cinnamon. The most dominant flavor of 5-spice powder is that of Chinese cinnamon and star anise. If you are in a pinch, a blend of these two common spices can be used as a substitution for a Chinese five-spice blend.
  • Baharat. Baharat is a spice mixture that gives Middle Eastern (mostly Lebanese) cooking its distinctive flavor. In Arab cooking, it’s equivalent to what garam masala is to Indian food or what five-spice is to Chinese cuisine.
  • Za’atar. Za’atar is a Middle Eastern spice mixture with a nutty, citrusy flavor. The ingredients can vary depending on the region. The common ingredients are sesame seeds, sumac, oregano, thyme, and salt.

THE BEST SIMPLE CHINESE 5-SPICE SUBSTITUTES | STONESOUP

From thestonesoup.com
  • Garam Masala. I was surprised how similar the Indian spice blend Garam Masala is to Chinese 5-Spice. Both contain fennel, cinnamon and cloves but Garam Masala includes carraway seeds and cardamom.
  • Garam Masala + Star Anise. For an even closer match add some ground star anise to your garam masala. Start with 1/4 teaspoon ground star anise and 3/4 teaspoons garam masala for 1 teaspoon of Chinese 5-spice.
  • Star Anise. Given this is the largest spice in the 5-spice blend, it can be substituted. Although I would use less so it doesn’t overpower.
  • Cinnamon. Cinnamon or cassia is one of the spices in the blend. And while it won’t have the same complexity, it will add the spicy sweetness you get from 5-spice so better than nothing!
  • Baharat. This is a long shot but if you happen to have the Lebanese spice Baharat in the house it could be used. Baharat contains paprika and cumin which will give a different vibe, but better than no spice :)
