Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a small bowl, stir together the buttermilk powder, dried parsley, dried chives, dried dill, dry mustard, cayenne, garlic powder and onion powder. (This is a homemade dry ranch seasoning mix which you could also treat like the packet and stir into sour cream or Greek yogurt for a quick dip!)
  • In a large bowl, combine the pretzel snaps, Cheddar bunnies, oyster crackers, sriracha peas and white Cheddar balls.
  • Melt the butter in a small skillet (or the microwave) and stir in the sriracha.
  • Drizzle the butter mixture over the snack mix and toss with the seasoning mix and Parmesan. Spread on the prepared baking sheet and bake, tossing once or twice, until everything is dry and toasted, about 25 minutes. Let cool on the baking sheet.

2 tablespoons buttermilk powder
2 teaspoons dried parsley
2 teaspoons dried chives
1 teaspoon dried dill
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
3 cups pretzel snaps
2 cups Cheddar bunny crackers
2 cups oyster crackers
2 cups sriracha peas (or use wasabi peas if the sriracha ones are hard to find)
2 cups white Cheddar cheese balls
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons sriracha
3 tablespoons grated Parmesan

SPICED ORANGE CRUMBLE COOKIES

Citrus in three forms - fresh zest, juice and preserves - gives buttery baked goods a nice bright flavor. This crisp brown sugar cookie is baked with orange marmalade, then topped with a grating of orange zest after it comes out of the oven for layers of citrus freshness. With a dash of clove and black pepper, it's reminiscent of the piney, spiced scents of winter fir. You'll love the aroma that fills your kitchen while they bake, and enjoy them with tea and coffee.

Steps:

  • Position a rack in the middle of the oven and heat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9-inch springform pan.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the flour, almond flour, brown sugar, salt, cloves and black pepper. Rub the butter into the flour mixture using your fingers until small pebbles form. (Alternatively, use a food processor to pulse the dry ingredients with the butter.) Pour the cream over the mixture, stir just until combined and squeeze until the dough forms ¾-inch clumps. Transfer a little less than half of the crumble (1½ loosely packed cups/210 grams) to a small bowl and refrigerate.
  • Transfer the remaining dough to the buttered pan and flatten into an even layer by pressing into the bottom of the pan with a glass. Bake on the middle rack until the edges are golden brown and begin to pull away from the sides of the pan, about 22 to 25 minutes. Cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes. If you tap the surface of the cookie, it should sound hollow.
  • Spread the orange marmalade in an even layer over the surface. Sprinkle the reserved crumble over the top. Return to the oven and bake until the top is golden brown, about 35 minutes. Zest the orange directly over the top while the crumble is still warm. Cool completely in the pan, then run a knife along the edges of the crumble before releasing the sides. Dust with confectioners' sugar, cut into wedges and serve.

1/2 cup/115 grams cold unsalted butter, cut into ½-inch cubes, plus more at room temperature for brushing the pan
1 1/3 cups/175 grams all-purpose flour
3/4 cup/80 grams almond flour
3/4 cup packed/160 grams dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon kosher salt (Diamond Crystal)
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup/57 grams heavy cream
6 tablespoons/142 grams orange marmalade
1 whole orange
Confectioners' sugar, for dusting

SWEET, SALTY, SPICY PARTY NUTS

I find this technique much easier than the stovetop pan method. You'll get beautiful, perfectly frosted nuts that are roasted evenly, with no bitter burned spots.

SPICY SNACK MIX

Spicy Snack Mix is a light, crispy concoction that's a favorite of Betty Sitzman and her family in Wray, Colorado. The nuts help to satisfy the "hungries", and you can make the mix more or less spicy to suit your taste.

  • Original Chex Mix. Let’s start with a snack mix everyone knows – a copycat of the original Chex Mix. Chex Mix is still the big name in snack mixes. With this recipe, you can make your own.
  • Cookie Crunch Snack Mix. Looking for something to satisfy a serious sweet tooth? The cookie crunch snack mix is perfect. It’s a decadent mix of mini Oreos, Whoppers, Cookie Crisp cereal, and more.
  • Spooky Halloween Snack Mix. This Halloween snack mix is the perfect mix of sweet, salty, colorful, and crunchy. And it’s spooky, of course! A black bowl, some candy eyes, and spiders will take care of that.
  • Party Snack Mix. Try the party snack mix if you’re in the mood for something salty, savory, and spicy. It combines all your favorites – Bugles, Chex, pretzels, etc.
  • Sweet and Salty Caramel Popcorn Mix. Caramel popcorn mix is sweet and salty, alright, but that’s not all it is! It’s like Cracker Jacks, Chex Mix, and a bowl of potato chips all rolled into one.
  • Ranch Party Mix. This recipe is great if you don’t want to spend much time making something. You won’t have to worry about getting precise ratios of spices and seasonings.
  • Spicy Snack Mix. I like this mix not just because it’s spicy, although it definitely brings the heat. I appreciate it because it uses less popular ingredients.
  • White Chocolate Chex Mix. I like most varieties of snack mix. Even so, sweet and salty is usually my favorite combo. This festive white chocolate Chex Mix walks that line flawlessly.
  • Granola Snack Mix. Granola snack mix is a good option for when you want something healthier. Instead of ‘junk food,’ it combines oats, raisins, nuts, etc.
  • Indian Snack Mix. Snack mixes are popular all over the world. So don’t limit yourself to the ‘traditional’ snack mixes we eat here in the US. Branch out a little; maybe start with this Indian snack mix.
