GARBANZO ALA KING

I found this basic recipe in the Weimar Institute cookbook which is a vegan cookbook. I have altered it a little to suit my needs. This is a good vegetarian alternative to traditional Chicken ala King.

Garbanzo Ala King image

Steps:

  • Saute onion and celery until tender.
  • Combine almond milk with flour in large pot, heat slowly to make white sauce.
  • Add all ingredients, mix together and heat.
  • Serve over rice or noodles or toast.

15 1/2 ounces garbanzo beans
4 ounces mushroom pieces
2 ounces pimientos
1 small onion, chopped
2 ounces celery, chopped
4 ounces frozen peas
4 ounces chopped carrots, cooked
1 1/2 cups almond milk
2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper, to taste
1 teaspoon vegetable bouillon granules

Chickpea Ala King Recipe - (4.5/5) image

Steps:

  • Saute the onion, peppers and mushrooms for 5 minutes. Set aside. Put in blender the water, almonds, sesame seeds, McKays, garlic powder, onion, powder and flour. Blend several minutes, or until very smooth. Add to sauteed vegetables and bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring often. Let simmer for a few minutes until thickened. Add tarragon, cooked carrots, frozen peas, and garbanzos. Heat through. Serve over brown rice, noodles or buttered toast. Top with toasted almonds or cashews, if desired.

Gravy:
1 onion, chopped
1/2 each red and green pepper, diced
1 c fresh mushrooms, sliced (4 oz can will do)
1 tsp tarragon
1 c carrots, sliced and cooked until tender
2 c frozen green peas
2 cans (15 oz each) garbanzo beans
1/2 c toasted slivered almonds (opt)
3 c water, use bean juice then fill with water
1/2 c slivered almonds
3 tbsp sesame seeds
3 tbsp McKay's Chicken Seasoning (vegan) (Health Food Store)
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 tbsp onion powder
2 tbsp flour
