WHOLE LIME MARGARITA

Made with thin-skinned limes, these margaritas are bright and flavorful-nothing reminiscent of a bottled mix! The lime rind adds beautiful color and a burst of tart, but not overly sweet, taste. You'll never make a margarita the old way again.

Steps:

  • Moisten the rim of a margarita glass with a wedge of lime, and then roll the glass at an angle in the salt so that only the outside of the glass is salted.
  • Combine the Super Green Juice, tequila and orange liqueur in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously for 8 to 10 seconds. Strain into the prepared glass over ice. Garnish with a slice of lime.
  • Juice, in this order, the lemons, apple, romaine, cucumber and greens, following your juicer's specific settings for each. Serve the juice immediately over ice, if desired.

Lime wedge, for rim of glass, plus lime slice, for garnish
Coarse salt, for rim of glass
2 ounces Super Green Juice, recipe follows
2 ounces tequila
1 ounce orange liqueur, such as Cointreau
1 to 2 large, juicy lemons, peel and pith removed
1 medium Granny Smith apple, peeled and cored
2 romaine leaves
1/2 large cucumber
1 cup loosely packed hearty greens, such as spinach or kale

GATORADE MARGARITA

Any student, staff or alumnus from the University of Florida will be familiar with the famous sports drink invented at the school and named after the football team's mascot: the Gator. Make this to celebrate your college days (where you might have improvised a similar drink at the "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party") -- it's surprisingly tasty and an orange-slice garnish tips it over the top.

Steps:

  • Mix the sugar and salt in a shallow dish. Wet the rims of 4 to 6 rocks glasses with water and then dip in the sugar-salt mixture to coat.
  • Combine the sports drink, limeade concentrate, tequila and blue curacao in a large pitcher and stir. Fill the rocks glasses with ice, pour the margarita over and garnish each with an orange slice.

1/4 cup blue sanding sugar
1/4 cup kosher salt
One 20-ounce bottle blue sports drink, such as Cool Blue Gatorade ®, chilled
1 cup thawed frozen limeade concentrate
1 cup silver tequila
1/3 cup blue curacao
Fresh orange slices, for serving

THE PERFECT MARGARITA

Mastering the margarita requires a certain amount of practice, but once you dial-in your perfect ratio, it's a really easy cocktail to replicate. The classic recipe is 3 parts tequila, 2 parts triple sec, and 1 part freshly squeezed lime juice, and you should probably start off pretty close to that, but my personal favorite proportions are 4-3-2.

  • Stir all ingredients together until blended. If you feel the margarita needs sweetening, add simple syrup to taste.
  • Serve over ice in sugar- or salt-rimmed glasses, garnished with lime wedges or slices if desired.
  • *Just about any homemade green juice will work for this recipe. I made mine in a juicer with 3 oranges, 2 green apples, 2 inches fresh ginger, 2 limes, and 6 handfuls of fresh spinach. You can also puree the fruit in a blender or food processor and strain it through a cheesecloth or fine-mesh strainer if you do not have a juicer.
  • **Any store-bought green juices will work for this recipe. I recommend going with a sweeter juice, but go with whatever you’d like.
