Kathrikai Puli Kuzhambu (Brinjal Tamarind Gravy) image

Steps:

  • Slice brinjal vertically into 4 pieces.
  • Soak them in a bowl of water (to avoid bitter taste and to avoid black color).
  • Cut onions into small pieces.
  • Cut tomatoes into small pieces.
  • Soak a ball of tamarind(small lemon size) in a bowl water (50ml of water, may be). Leave it for 5 mins and filter the water for later use.
  • Pour the gingely oil on vessel and heat it.
  • Put the mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds.
  • Put the curry leaves and tear open dried chillies and put them too.
  • Put the cut onions and fry them for 5 mins on sim (low heat).
  • Put the cut brinjal and tomatoes
  • Put the turmeric powder.
  • Cook for 2 mins (medium heat).
  • Put the Kuzhambu powder and chilli powder.
  • Cook for 1 min.
  • Pour the tamarind water.
  • Put the salt and pour 150ml of water.
  • Close the vessel with lid. Cook for 2 min.
  • Open the lid and cook for a min.

1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
2 onions, medium size
2 tomatoes, small size
3 brinjals
2 dried chilies
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 1/2 teaspoons , kuzhambu milagai powder (gravy powder)
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
some curry leaf
1/2 teaspoon salt

  • Chop off ends of the stems of 6-8 tender brinjals and make a cross slit from the bottom, all the way to the top keeping the stem intact. Keep the cut brinjals immersed in water with 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder to stop them from oxidizing & turning bitter.
  • In a heavy pan heat 1.5 tbsp of gingelly oil/sesame oil. Add 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds, 1 dried red chilli cut into small pieces. As the mustard seeds splutter, add 1/4 tsp asafoetida along with 10-12 garlic cloves and few fresh curry leaves.
