MILDRED'S SUGAR COOKIES

Mildred was a neighbor of mine growing up. I was always bugging her to make her famous cookies. I miss her. Mom came across her recipe in an old box of recipes. Thank you Mildred!!

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients.
  • Chill for one hour.
  • Roll and cut.
  • (I use cutters) Bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes on ungreased baking sheet.
  • Sprinkle with colored sugar.

4 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
2 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
colored crystal sugar (optional)

GRANDMA MILDRED'S MANDEL BREAD

Traditional mandel bread (mandel brot) cookies. These cookies bake twice. The first time they fit on the same cookie sheet. Once you slice them, add another parchment-covered cookie sheet to make more room.

Grandma Mildred's Mandel Bread image

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Cover 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Combine 2 teaspoons white sugar with cinnamon in a small bowl; set aside.
  • Combine 1 cup sugar, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract in another bowl. Mix in flour and baking powder.
  • Roll dough out into 3 equal-sized logs, about 2 inches wide. Place on one of the prepared baking sheets.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven. Slice each log into 1/2-inch slices. Place slices on their sides on both prepared baking sheets. Return to the oven and continue to bake until lightly browned, about 10 minutes.

  • Cream lard and butter with sugar.
  • Add eggs.
  • Add vanilla, baking powder and baking soda.
  • Add sour cream.
  • Add flour.
  • Add oatmeal.
  • Add raisins.
  • Let stand 1 hour.
  • Drop by teaspoonful on baking sheet sprayed with Pam.
  • Bake 10 minutes in 350° degree oven or until golden.
