- Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. Combine dry ingredients and add to mixture. Stir in apples. Spoon into greased 11 x 13 pan. Bake at 350 for 45-50 minutes or until the toothpick comes out clean.
NANA'S GERMAN APPLE CAKE
This is a slight variation of a recipe of my Grandmother's. It is very simple to make. If you can't find vanilla bean paste you can use vanilla extract. This German Apple Cake is great as a dessert or even as breakfast.

Steps:
- Cream the butter, sugar and vanilla extract.
- In a seperate bowl mix together the flour, salt, baking powder and nutmeg.
- Slowly add the dry ingredients into the mixer with the creamed butter and mix.
- Add the eggs and mix until everything is fully incorporated.
- Roll dough into a ball and chill in the fridge for 1 hour.
- Peaheat oven to 350°F.
- Put half of dough into a greased and flowered 9 in round baking pan or pie pan and press down to pack.
- Cover with chopped apples.
- Cover with the rest of dough and sprinkle with cinnamon and turbinado sugar.
- Bake for about 50-60 minutes at 350°F or until the top becomes golden brown.
