Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Put margarine, brown sugar, molasses, egg, flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, clove, and ginger into mixing bowl and mix.
  • Roll into walnut size balls.
  • Put about 1/2 cup of regular sugar in cereal size bowl, and 1/2 cup water in ramekin size dish.
  • Roll dough ball in sugar.
  • Place wide apart on slightly greased cookie sheet; dip a glass into water and flatten the cookie.
  • Bake at 375 degrees for 8 minutes, or until done to your family's preferences.
  • NOTE: If it is a dark cookie sheet it will take less time than on a brand new shiny sheet; and if they sit on the hot sheet after removing from oven they will harden even more. Some like these cookies hard but I do not.

3/4 cup margarine
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon clove
1 teaspoon ginger
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup water

MOM'S GINGERSNAPS

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350F degrees.
  • Combine dry ingredients and set aside.
  • In a large bowl beat butter till soft, gradually add sugar.
  • Beat in egg and molasses.
  • Stir in flour mixture.
  • Roll into balls, then roll in sugar.
  • Bake 10- 12 minutes.
  • Cooking time depends on the size of cookie.
  • I have small children so I make them quite small and the baking time decreases.
  • The yield is not correct- It depends on the size of the cookie- I do not know the amount it will make?

2 1/4 cups flour
2 teaspoons ginger
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon clove
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup butter or 3/4 cup margarine
3/4 cup white sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses
1/2 cup sugar (separate for rolling cookies in)

GINGERSNAPS

Friends and neighbors look for these old-time cookies on the goody trays I make for them every holiday. They're irresistible for dunking into milk, and they bring back a nostalgic spicy flavor of Christmases past. —Elizabeth Flatt, Kelso, Washington

A+ MOLASSES GINGER SNAPS

Ginger snaps are sometimes hard, flat dry things albeit with great flavor, but Colin's mom knows what she is doing. Hers are super chewy and soft, baked in balls of dough rather than flat cookies. Giving everyone a a run for the money in the best cookie in the world contest and, in this case, I got the recipe. Yep, there it is, the much maligned but delicious dirty little secret of foodies everywhere. Crisco. Huge thanks to Mrs. MacLauchlan (and her son Colin!) for sharing her secret.
