Cream of Nectar Sno-Ball image

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, mix the sugar and spring water and start mixing with a spoon until the sugar dissolves. Then add the milk, cream nectar flavor, vanilla and pink food coloring and stir again. Shave 1 bowl of ice, then pour syrup over. Make sure you pour syrup between each layer.

1 cup sugar
1 cup bottled spring water
1/2 cup whole milk
1/2 ounce cream nectar flavor
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon pink food coloring

Growing up in New Orleans, we used to go to the K&B for a nectar ice cream soda. Make this syrup and add it to some seltzer water with a giant scoop of vanilla ice cream! I think you'll love it, a different ice cream soda.

  • Let boil about 10 seconds and remove from the heat, let it cool.
  • Add vanilla, almond extract, and coloring, stir well.
  • Keep in the refrigerator.

Steps:

  • In a pitcher, combine the fruit juice, sugar, lime juice, rum and grenadine; stir until sugar is dissolved. , Pour into hurricane or highball glasses filled with ice. Serve with orange slices, starfruit slices and cherries.

6 to 8 cups ice cubes

SOUR CHERRY SYRUP

Pour in about a half inch of syrup into a tall glass, and add lots of ice cubes and seltzer or club soda. You might even prefer water instead. Iranis add a sprig of fresh mint and a sour cherry to the glass as well.

Steps:

  • Puree the cherries in a blender or food processor in small batches. Run juice through a fine sieve, pressing hard to extract all the juice.
  • In a large saucepan, mix cherry juice with sugar, water and lime juice and bring to a boil, stirring consistently, until sugar dissolves.
  • Cook over moderate heat for 10 minutes, skimming off the foam that rises to the top with a slotted spoon.
  • Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring and skimming, until syrupy, about 1 hour.
  • Strain the syrup into jars and let cool completely before storing.

  • Dirty Rice. First of all, the dirty rice you can buy in a box is not Louisiana-style dirty rice. For one thing, it’s missing the beef, pork sausage, and veggies.
  • New Orleans Barbecue Shrimp. For me, this dish is entirely about the spices and sauce. The shrimp is totally secondary. It could just as well be pork, beef, or chicken under all that sauce, and I’d still love it just as much.
  • Red Beans and Rice. Authentic New Orleans-style red beans and rice takes about an hour to make, but it’s super yummy and well worth the time it takes you to prepare it.
  • New Orleans Muffuletta. A great muffuletta has four key components: good bread, crisp and zesty olive salad, tender meat, and the perfect selection of cheeses.
  • Crawfish Beignets. Typically, we think of beignets as sweet, deep-fried desserts. These crawfish beignets are nothing of the sort. They’re deep-fried, but that’s where the resemblance to sweet beignets ends.
