MEATLESS SLOPPY JOES RECIPE BY TASTY

Here's what you need: olive oil, medium yellow onion, green bell pepper, garlic, chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, textured vegetable protein, vegetable broth, tomato sauce, vegan worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, hamburger buns

Meatless Sloppy Joes Recipe by Tasty image

Steps:

  • In a medium skillet, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium heat. Once the oil begins to shimmer, add the onion and cook for 2-3 minutes, until semi-translucent.
  • Add the bell pepper and cook for another 2-3 minutes, until the onion is translucent.
  • Add the garlic, chili powder, cumin, paprika, and salt and cook 2-3 minutes more, until the garlic is soft and fragrant. Season with salt.
  • Add the textured vegetable protein, vegetable broth, and tomato sauce and stir well until combined. Cover and cook for 15 minutes, until most of the liquid has been absorbed.
  • Remove the lid and add the Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, and yellow mustard. Mix to combine and cook for 3-4 more minutes, until the remaining liquid has been absorbed.
  • Serve on hamburger buns.
  • Enjoy!

As far as I can tell, this came from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. By making your own seasoning mix, you control the sodium, along with the rest(which chili powder,ketchup, etc. you prefer). By using salt-free ketchup, you can eliminate the salt and still serve a tasty Sloppy Joe.

  • .While browning the ground beef, mix the dry ingredients. After beef is browned, drain off drippings, add seasoning mix and liquid ingredients. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring often, til desired thickness, if necessary, add water.
  • 1 8 oz can tomato sauce +1 to 2 tablespoons vinegar + 1 teaspoon sugar can be substituted for the salt-free ketchup.

This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.

Low Salt / Sodium Low Fat Turkey Sloppy Joes image

Steps:

  • Remove seeds from jalapeno peppers and dice.
  • Dice onion and green pepper.
  • Sauté onion, jalapenos and green pepper in EVO then set aside.
  • Cook ground turkey crumbling into little pieces.
  • Drain and return to pan.
  • Over med-high heat add all of the ingredients into the pan.
  • Stir mixture for 3-5 minute.
  • Lower heat to low and simmer for 5-10 min to fuse flavors.
  • Serve on either crusty rolls or hamburger buns.
  • Leave out the jalapeno if you don't like it hot. If you do throw in 2 more.
  • Additions: Try adding diced tomatoes or olives and top with cheese if you so desire.

  • Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat. Add beef and brown, breaking apart into small crumbles as it cooks, about 10 minutes. Drain any grease.
  • Add diced onion and bell pepper to same skillet and cook 2-3 minutes, until soft. Add garlic and cook for another 30 seconds or so. Add beef back to the skillet and mix well.
  • While the beef is cooking add the ingredients to a small mixing bowl using ½ the water or ½ cup. Whisk together until smooth. Add to the beef and vegetable mix in the skillet.
  • Cook over medium low heat for 10-15 minutes, until mixture has thickened to your desire. Use any remaining water as need to your desired consistency.
