Grandma's Split Pea Soup image

Steps:

  • In large saucepot heat olive oil and add shallots.
  • Wait 3 minutes then add garlic.
  • wait 3 minutes add water then all other ingredients.
  • bring to a boil then drop to a simmer for 1 hour with cover on but tilted to vent.
  • serve with some good croutons.

1 (16 ounce) bag green peas
10 cups water
1 large shallot (diced)
1 tablespoon minced garlic clove
1 tablespoon chicken bouillon (powdered)
1/4 teaspoon thyme
1/4 teaspoon savory
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 dash salt
1/8 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1 ham bone
1/2 cup cooked ham (small pieces)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 bay leaf

After any family ham dinner, my grandmother, and then my mother, and finally me, always use the hambone to make this hearty, home-y soup.

Grandma's Split Pea Soup image

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a large soup pot.
  • Bring to a boil slowly.
  • Reduce heat and simmer until thick.
  • Remove bone, skin, and any fat.
  • Chop meat into bite-sized pieces.
  • Season to taste.

1 lb split peas (yellow or green)
10 cups cold water
1/2 cup diced carrot
1/2 cup diced onion
1 lb ham bone (can substitute smoked ham hocks)
salt and pepper

Hollandse Erwten (Split Pea) Soup image

Steps:

  • Empty split peas from package,; wash and check for foreign matter.
  • Cut carrots, celery, bacon and onion into 1/4-inch dice; set aside.
  • Peel and quarter potato; set aside.
  • Add Bacon to 6 quart pot and over medium heat stir and fry until crispy.
  • Remove Bacon and discard all but a teaspoon of bacon fat.
  • Add onions and cook until caramelized.
  • Add 4 quarts water and split peas to the pot on high flame; bring to boil.
  • Turn down flame to low to medium.
  • Add potato and rinsed ham hocks.
  • Cook approximately 1 hour or until potato is almost done.
  • Add celery and carrots.
  • Cook an additional 20-30 minutes.
  • Take the ham hocks out of the pot and remove the meat.
  • Take your potato masher and mash the potato to thicken the soup.
  • Add the ham hock meat.
  • Stir this soup occasionally as the peas tend to stick to the bottom of the pot.
  • Do not add salt and pepper as ham hocks may be salty enough.
  • Serve with croutons.
  • Add salt and pepper to taste.

2 (16 ounce) packages split peas
1 medium onion (medium to large)
3 large carrots
2 stalks celery
1 large baking potato
1/4 lb bacon
2 large ham hocks, cut in half by the butcher
4 quarts water

Snert (Split Pea Soup) image

Steps:

  • Place dried split peas, ham hock, and bacon into slow cooker; pour in chicken broth and 3 1/2 cups water.
  • Cover cooker and cook on High until peas are tender and broken apart, 3 to 4 hours. Stir in more water as needed to prevent soup from burning on the bottom. Stir occasionally throughout cooking.
  • Stir potatoes, carrots, leek, onion, celery, and garlic into soup; mix in more water, if needed. Cover and cook soup on High for 2 more hours.
  • Season with salt, black pepper, thyme, nutmeg, and cloves; mix sausage slices into soup. Cover and cook 2 more hours to blend the flavors.
