Steps:

  • For the apples: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish with butter.
  • Arrange the apple slices in the prepared baking dish in an even layer. In a bowl, mix together the granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples, then pour 1/2 cup water over top.
  • For the topping: In a separate bowl, mix the flour, oats, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and a pinch of salt. Stir while drizzling in the melted butter. Sprinkle the topping in an even layer over the apples.
  • Bake until the topping is slightly crisp and golden brown, about 43 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature on its own, with ice cream or with frozen custard.

8 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced
1 cup granulated sugar
1 heaping tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup quick-cooking oats
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch of kosher salt
1 stick (8 tablespoons) salted butter, melted
Ice cream or frozen custard, for serving

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 2 (10-oz) ovenproof ramekins with cooking spray.
  • In medium bowl, mix all Topping ingredients except butter. With fork, mix in melted butter until crumbly; reserve.
  • In another medium bowl, mix Filling ingredients. Divide filling evenly between ramekins. Top each with half of the topping, mounding the topping (it will settle during baking).
  • Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until apples are tender and topping is brown. Serve warm.

Healthier Apple Crisp for Two image

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease two 8-oz ramekins and place them on a baking sheet.
  • Combine apples, maple syrup, lemon juice, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt for the filling in a bowl; toss until thoroughly mixed. Divide mixture between the prepared ramekins.
  • Combine oats, flour, maple syrup, cinnamon, and salt for the topping in a bowl; mix until thoroughly combined. Cut in softened butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle crumb topping evenly on top of the filling in the ramekins.
  • Place baking sheet with ramekins into the preheated oven and bake until apples are tender and the topping is slightly browned, 25 to 30 minutes. Cool for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

This lovely apple dessert was in the Taste of Home magazine issue from December 2012/January 2013. The recipe originated with Char Morse from Michigan. She fixed this dish for the nearby Muskegon Rescue Mission, a homeless shelter, to help teach her children about homeless children.

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, beat the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt, until crumbly. Add flour and oats; mix well. Press 3 cups oat mixture onto the bottom of a greased 9x13x2 inch baking dish.
  • 2. In another bowl, mix the first five filling ingredients. Add apples and vanilla; toss to combine. Spoon over oat layer. Dot with butter; sprinkle with remaining oat mixture.
  • 3. Bake, uncovered, for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown and apples are tender. If desired, serve with toppings.
