WEST VIRGINIA STYLE HOT DOG

West Virginia Style Hot Dog image

Steps:

  • Grill, steam or boil the hot dogs. In the meantime, heat the Chili until hot throughout. Place each hot dog in a bun, and top each with a generous amount of Chili, coleslaw and yellow mustard, and then serve.
  • In a stockpot or Dutch oven, combine the beef (do not brown first), onions, tomato sauce, paste, chili powder, sugar, salt, pepper, garlic salt and 2 cups water. Mix until combined, then add the bay leaves. Cover and simmer over medium-low heat for about 2 hours.
  • Stir in the vinegar and simmer another 30 minutes.

1 cup store-bought coleslaw
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
2 pounds lean ground beef
1 medium yellow onion, grated
One 16-ounce can tomato sauce
One 12-ounce can tomato paste
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic salt
2 bay leaves
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar

Footlong West Virginia-Style Hot Dogs with Bourbon-Bacon Slaw image

Steps:

  • Grill, steam or boil the hot dogs. In the meantime, heat the Chili until hot throughout.
  • Place each hot dog in a bun, then top with a generous amount of the Chili, Bourbon-Bacon Slaw and yellow mustard.
  • In a stockpot or Dutch oven, combine the beef (do not brown first), chili powder, sugar, salt, pepper, garlic salt, tomato sauce, tomato paste, onion and 2 cups water. Mix until combined, then add the bay leaves. Bring to a simmer, lower the heat to medium low, cover and simmer for about 2 hours.
  • Stir in the vinegar and simmer another 30 minutes.
  • In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, brown sugar, bourbon, mustard, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper and lime juice. Pour the dressing over the coleslaw mix in a large bowl and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours and up to 6 hours. Just before serving, stir in the bacon.

COLE SLAW WV STYLE

My Granny Leona Hayner made it this way and my mom (Helen Ferrell) and the Hayner family always said I was the only one who could make it like Granny did. It's a hard recipe to write down because I've always just grabbed and dumped when making it. Sometimes I add a little celery seed sometimes I don't.

  • 1. Mix cabbage, carrot, sugar, salt and pepper together
  • 2. Add mayonase, thin with a small splash of buttermilk.
  • 3. Mix together and chill, should have a sweet yet tangy taste, serve cold on BBQ, West Virginia style hot dogs, as a side with ribs or brisket, pinto beans and cornbread.

WEST VIRGINIA HOT DOGS -

Steps:

  • 1. *May use plain cabbage OR package of cabbage mix found in produce department of store, as you prefer.
  • 2. 1)COLE SLAW: If using head of cabbage, it needs to be shredded. Shred carrots. Chop or mince onion OR use dried. Place cabbage and McCormick's Slaw Mix in large mixing bowl. Add carrots and onions. Stir in mayonnaise, sugar, vinegar, and celery seed. Chill at least one-half hour before serving.
  • 3. 2) Open can of hot dog sauce, pour into pan to heat on stove or pour into glass bowl to heat in microwave, as you prefer.
  • 4. 3) Heat hot dogs and buns, as you prefer.
  • 5. 4) Place hot dogs in buns and spoon on sauce, then cover with slaw mix. ENJOY!
