Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • To make the dough cut 1/2 cup butter into 1 cup flour using a knife or pastry blender. Add water as needed and mix until crumbly, leaving pea-sized chunks. On a floured surface roll the dough out to 3 or 4 inches in width. Place on a rectangular cookie sheet.
  • In a small saucepan over high heat, bring 1 cup water and 1/2 cup butter to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in flour; mix until smooth. Beat in eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. Stir in 1 teaspoon almond extract. Spread filling over dough.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 55 to 60 minutes. The pastry will fall a little as it cools.
  • Meanwhile, combine confectioners' sugar, cream, 1 tablespoon butter and 1 teaspoon almond extract. Spread icing over pastry as soon as it's removed from the oven.

Steps:

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Combine the cereals in a bag and roughly crush into small pieces with a rolling pin. Pour into a large bowl, add the peanuts and raisins and toss.
  • Combine the butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, heavy cream and salt in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat, stirring, until the caramel darkens a shade and releases from the sides of the pan when stirred, 4 to 7 minutes. Remove from the heat. When the caramel stops bubbling, stir in the marshmallows and food coloring. Add to the cereal mixture and stir.
  • Working quickly, drop 1/4-cup mounds of the mixture onto the baking sheet. Let cool slightly, then press each into a wreath shape while still warm and press mini M&M'S onto each. Let stand until set, about 1 hour.

1 1/2 cups cornflakes
1 1/2 cups graham cereal
1/4 cup salted peanuts, chopped
1/4 cup raisins, chopped
1 stick unsalted butter
1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
1/4 cup light corn syrup
2 tablespoons heavy cream
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup mini marshmallows
8 to 10 drops green gel food coloring
Red and green mini M&M'S, for decorating

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, stir together the heavy cream and sour cream. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  • Let the sour cream mixture come to room temperature. It should take about 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 475 degrees F (245 degrees C).
  • In a large bowl, mix the sugar, shortening, and egg yolk together using an electric mixer. Stir the vanilla and baking soda into the sour cream mixture. Stir the sour cream mixture into the bowl with the sugar and shortening until well blended. Combine the flour and baking powder; stir into the batter until fully incorporated.
  • Place the dough on a well-floured surface, as the dough will be sticky. Use ping pong ball sized pieces of dough, and roll out into an 8 or 9 inch rope. Form into a 'lazy eight' or 'infinity sign', and pinch the ends together. Place on ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 5 minutes in the preheated oven, or until slightly brown. Cool completely before storing in an airtight container. Store at room temperature for up to 5 days, or 1 month in the freezer.

FIVE-MINUTE FUDGE WREATHS

Steps:

  • Butter an 8-inch round cake pan with softened butter.
  • Pour the chocolate and butterscotch chips, condensed milk and vanilla into a medium saucepan. Put the pan on the stove and turn the heat to low.
  • Cover the empty condensed milk can with plastic wrap and put it in the center of the round cake pan.
  • Stir the chips and milk until they melt together, about 3 minutes. (Make sure fudge is warm, smooth and shiny--warm enough that it won't set up instantly when you stir in the cooler nuts and raisins). Stir in nuts and raisins. Scoop the fudge into the cake pan all around the plastic-covered can in the center to form a wreath or ring shape. Let it be all bumpy on top. If the fudge moves the can off center, move it back in place.
  • Cut the red cherries in half with scissors and the green cherries into quarters. Use the green pieces to make leaves and the red to make holly berries. Decorate the fudge with several groups of holly berry sprigs made from the cherries and garnish with walnuts between the sprigs.
  • Put the fudge in the refrigerator and chill until firm (about a half hour). Remove the can from the center, then loosen the sides and bottom of the fudge with a spatula. Cut the fudge into thin slices to serve.

1/2 cup raisins or 1/2 cup dried currant
candied red cherries

SWEDISH LEMON ANGELS

Steps:

  • In a small bowl or 2-cup measuring cup, beat the egg until foamy. Add buttermilk and vanilla and blend well. Add the baking soda, one teaspoonful at a time, sprinkling it in and beating until the mixture is smooth and the consistency of light cream. Add the lemon juice all at once and blend into the mixture. Stir, do not beat (you want it creamy but without a lot of air). The mixture will congeal into a pasty lump. Scoop it out of the bowl using a spatula and spread it on a floured surface. Sift the flour and 3/4 cup sugar together and use the fingertips to work it into the egg-lemon mixture. With a floured rolling pin, roll the dough out 1/32 inches thick, and with the tip of a sharp knife, cut the "angel" shapes and twist up the edges to form a shell-like curve about 3/8 inch high. Sprinkle on the remainder of the sugar. Brush each angel with melted butter. Place angels 1-inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet and bake for 12 minutes or until golden.;

1 egg
1/2 cup buttermilk (or 1/4 cup milk mixed with 1/4 cup vinegar)
5 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup lemon juice
1 1/4 cups sugar
7/8 cup all-purpose flour
8 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
