Steps:
- Cream sugar and shortening until light and fluffy. Add egg, vanilla, and salt, mix well. Add flour and combine. Place cookie batter on an ungreased 12"x15" cookie sheet and roll with a rolling pin to 1/4" thickness. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. While cookie is hot, spread thinly with jam and dust with icing sugar. Sprinkle with nuts. Press nuts gently into cookie to stick. Cut immediately into 1"x3" strips.
SWEDISH NUTS II
I make these wonderful sweet nuts using pecans every year for Christmas. They are a true delight, especially if you are a lover of nuts. If pecans aren't your forte, substitute walnuts. Happy Holidays!

- Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
- Beat egg whites until soft peaks begin to form. Add sugar, salt and vanilla; beat until stiff peaks form and turn glossy. Fold in nuts and coat well with the egg white mixture.
- Melt butter in a 9x13 inch baking pan by placing pan in the oven. Evenly spread coated nuts over melted butter in pan.
- Bake for 30 minutes, stirring and turning nuts about every 8 minutes, or until butter no longer remains in pan. Place hot nuts on foil and allow to cool. May be stored in an airtight container for several weeks!

- In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add the sugar, oil, egg whites, salt and 1 cup flour; beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. , Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead until smooth, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a bowl coated with cooking spray, turning once to coat the top. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour. , Combine the walnuts, cherries, brown sugar and cinnamon; set aside. Punch dough down; roll into an 18x12-in. rectangle. Brush with butter; sprinkle with nut mixture to within 1/2 in. of edges. Roll up jelly-roll style, starting with a long side; pinch seam to seal. , Place seam side down on a 14-in. pizza pan coated with cooking spray; pinch ends together to form a ring. With scissors, cut from outside edge two-thirds of the way toward center of ring at scant 1-in. intervals. Separate strips slightly; twist to allow filling to show. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 40 minutes., Bake at 400° for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pan to a wire rack to cool. , In a small bowl, combine confectioners' sugar and enough milk to achieve desired consistency; drizzle over tea ring.

- Heat oven to 375°F.
- In bowl, mix flour, 2 tablespoons sugar and salt; cut in butter until mixture is crumbly.
- Stir in egg; form dough into a ball.
- Cover; chill for 15 minutes.
- Divide dough in half.
- On lightly greased baking sheet, shape each half into a 10X2- inch rectangle.
- Make a 1-inch wide indentation down the center length of each rectangle; fill each with 1/2 cup of applesauce.
- Mix remaining 1 tablespoon sugar, walnuts and cinnamon; sprinkle on dough along sides of applesauce filling.
- Bake 20 minutes.
- Cool slightly on wire rack.
- Cut into 1-inch diagonal slices.
- Cool completely.
- Store in airtight container.

- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar and salt. Cut in butter until crumbly.
