VEGETABLE GARDEN INSECT SPRAY

I use this solution for most of my vegetables. The only vegetable I might not use it on is Cauliflower. The cauliflower leaves don't seem to like it. I have used it on broccoli, tomatoes, green snap beans, bell peppers, lettuces and spinach. The insects do not like these flavors!

Steps:

  • Put the funnel in the bottle, then add all the dry ingredients.
  • Pour in the very warm water. Hold the cap tightly and shake to mix. Let this steep for several hours or overnight. Use a fine strainer to filter out the particles into a sprayer or spray bottle - each time you fill up - or else the smallest pieces will clog your sprayer nozle Store in your garage or wherever you keep your gardening items. Because as this sits and steeps, it does get strong.
  • I spray this solution on my garden veggies when their leaves are fairly grown and your season is showing more signs of bugs! Note: You must reapply after a rainfall. You will actually watch the insects fly away as you spray this. Those white moths love to fly around your broccoli to lay their eggs...so when you start seeing those white moths around your garden..better get out your spray bottle!

1 gallon jug (a milk bottle w/cap works)
1 - funnel (to add your ingred. easily to the jug)
1 - fine wired kitchen strainer
1 gallon very warm water
3 - smashed garlic cloves ( or 2 tbsp garlic powder)
2 tablespoon(s) hot pepper flakes

Author Holly Reaney
  • Insecticidal soap. A popular bug spray for treating a wide range of pests, homemade insecticidal soap, consists of soap, oil and water. Homemade insecticidal soap is often the first port of call for many gardeners as the ingredients are all store cupboard essentials.
  • Neem oil bug spray. An organic insecticide, neem oil has seen a rise in popularity as a method to treat everything from insects through to fungi. ‘Neem oil has been used in India for thousands of years and is a trusted method to keep on top of pests, without any of the nasties,’ explains John Maree, co-owner of OxyPlants (opens in new tab). ‘
  • Vinegar spray. It seems that there is no end to the abilities of vinegar, especially when you take into account the numerous ways of cleaning with vinegar, but did you know that it can also be used as a bug spray?
  • Garlic spray. You may have heard that onions and garlic make good companion plants as the scent of their foliage helps to repel aphids, slugs and carrot fly.
  • Tomato leaf spray. If you’ve ever tried growing tomatoes, you will be familiar with the characteristic scent of their leaves, but did you know that these leaves contain a compound called alkaloid which can be used to create a spray that is toxic to aphids and mites?
  • Cinnamon spray. If you’ve ever grown plants in pots, you’ll be familiar with the problem of stray mushrooms. However, this can be easily resolve with a simple cinnamon spray.

8 NATURAL & HOMEMADE INSECTICIDES: SAVE YOUR GARDEN

From treehugger.com
  • Vegetable Oil Spray. A homemade insecticide made from vegetable oil mixed with a mild soap (such as Dr. Bronner's castile soap) can have a devastating effect on certain troublesome insects, such as aphids, mites, thrips, etc.
  • Soap Spray. A very similar homemade pesticide to the oil spray is a soap spray, which is also effective for controlling mites, aphids, whiteflies, beetles, and other hungry little insects.
  • Neem Oil Spray. An oil extracted from the seeds of the neem tree is a powerful natural insecticide, capable of disrupting the life cycle of insects at all stages (adult, larvae, and egg), making it a great resource for the organic gardener.
  • Diatomaceous Earth. This natural substance with a somewhat unwieldy name is made from a sedimentary rock created by fossilized algae (diatoms), and which is a rather abundant resource (diatomaceous earth is said to make up 26 percent of the earth's crust by weight).
  • Garlic Spray. Garlic is well-known for its pungent aroma, which is delectable to some and yet repellent to others, and it is this strong scent that comes into play when used as a natural insecticide.
  • Chile Pepper Spray. Similar to garlic spray, chile pepper spray is a great homemade natural insect repellent that can be used for a variety of different pests.
  • All-in-One Homemade Spray. From the folks at Rodale's Organic Life comes this all-in-one DIY natural insecticide, which is said to be a combination of many different recipes submitted by readers.
  • Tomato Leaf Spray. I have to admit that this one is new to me, but I've seen enough mentions of it now to warrant its inclusion here as a natural pesticide.
