Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
  • Mix together whole-wheat flour, all-purpose flour, cornmeal and oats. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and gradually pour in water, oil, eggs, peanut butter and vanilla. Mix well.
  • On a flat surface use a rolling pin to roll out the dough. Cut the dough into dog biscuit shapes using a cookie cutter. Place the biscuits onto the prepared cookie sheet.
  • Bake the cookies for 20 minutes. After the biscuits have cooked 20 minutes turn off the oven off but let the biscuits remain inside the oven for another 20 minutes to harden.

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
  • In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the two flours, the powdered milk, oatmeal, peanut butter and wheat germ. With the mixer on low speed, add the extra-large egg and 1 cup of water and mix just until it forms a slightly sticky ball.
  • Dump the dough out on a well-floured board (I use all-purpose flour) and knead it into a ball. Roll the dough out 1/2-inch thick. Dip a cookie cutter in flour and cut out dog bone shapes. Collect the scraps, knead lightly, roll out again and cut more dog biscuits.
  • Place the biscuits on the prepared sheet pan and brush with the egg wash. Sprinkle with oatmeal and bake for 1 hour, until completely hard. Cool and toss.

1 1/2 cups stone-ground whole-wheat flour
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup powdered or dry milk
1/2 cup quick-cooking oatmeal (not instant), plus extra for sprinkling
1/2 cup smooth peanut butter
2 tablespoons toasted wheat germ
1 extra-large egg, lightly beaten
1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water, for egg wash

Steps:

  • Make the biscuits: Preheat the oven to 350˚. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Whisk together the barley and rye flours, cinnamon, ginger and cloves in a medium bowl. Beat the vegetable oil, molasses, peanut butter and eggs in a large bowl with a mixer on medium speed until combined, 1 to 2 minutes. Add the flour mixture and stir together with a wooden spoon.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead until a solid ball of dough forms, adding more barley flour as needed. Roll out the dough until about 1/4 inch thick. Cut out shapes with a floured 3 1/2-inch bone cookie cutter.
  • Transfer the biscuits to the prepared baking sheet. Bake until browned and crisp, 20 to 30 minutes. Let cool completely on the pan.
  • Make the frosting: Combine the cream cheese, yogurt and honey in a large bowl. Beat with a mixer on medium speed until smooth. Spread on the cooled biscuits using a small offset spatula.

1 teaspoon ground cloves
